Skeleton of the Young Mammoth in the Museum at Philadelphia.
Skeleton of the Young Mammoth in the Museum at Philadelphia.
Pub.d by Sir Richard Phillips & Co. May 31st 1821.
Rare engraving. Sheet 190 x 245mm (7½ x 9¾"). Trimmed to printed border, edges chipped, stained. Damaged.
A mounted skeleton, with a man reaching up to touch the bottom of its ribcage. In 1801 a pit of fossilized mammoth bones was discovered on a farm in upstate New York. It was excavated by Charles Willson Peale, a naturalist and museum curator, with a team of twenty-five men to help him dig out the bones. The remains were transported to Philadelphia, where the sculptor William Rush modelled the missing bones in wood so the skeleton could be assembled. Peale then took the skeleton on the road, selling tickets to view it and even eat dinner within it, before returning it to Philadelphia and his museum of natural history there. When American president Thomas Jefferson sent the Lewis & Clark expedtion across North America in 1804 he hoped they would find a live mammoth, not realising they had been long extinct.
