Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry (1743-93) was the last mistress of King Louis XV of France, she was renowned for her influence in the court of Versailles. During the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution, Jeanne was imprisoned over accusations of treason by her servant Zamor; particularly being suspected of assisting émigrés to flee from the Revolution. A stone block appears to the left, with a column and flowers behind her. In the distance are formal gardens featuring a statue and fountain, with palatial buildings beyond. A courtier and the daughter of Sir Richard Mason, she was born in Shropshire. She married first Charles Gerard, Viscount Brandon, in 1683, and later Henry Brett in 1700. A great-granddaughter of Charles II and daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, she married Charles Bunbury in 1762, shortly after which he commissioned this portrait. Butler was an army officer and politician, born Dublin Castle; succeeded his grandfather James Butler as Duke of Ormond. Full-length portrait, probably of Grace Carteret (c.1667-1744), seated and dressed in a loose gown, holding a bunch of grapes. A bowl of fruit stands beside her, while a curtain and fluted pillar frame the scene. In the distance, a formal garden with fountains can be seen. Carteret was Countess Granville in her own right and the wife of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret. She was the second daughter of Sir John Granville, and his wife, Jane Wyche. An almost full-length portrait of Charlotte, Queen of George III (1744-1818) seated slightly to the left, facing forward. Her right arm rests on a cushion atop an ornate table, while her hands are gently clasped. She wears pearls and a voluminous lace-trimmed gown, with a draped curtain overhead. This is a later state of the print, reworked to remove the flowers from the table; her hairstyle has been altered to a half-up arrangement adorned with a plume. Three-quarter length seated portrait of Catherine, Lady Copley (née Purcell) (c. 1657–1699) wearing pearls in her hair, a loose dress, and resting her elbow on a pedestal; curtain in background. She was the daughter of Welsh politician John Purcell (c.1594 - 1665) from Nantcribba, Montgomeryshire (now Powys). A noted English beauty of the late 17th century she was a popular sitter for several eminent painters of the Restoration era.
