A book plate illustrating the observations of Francis Wolferstan Esq. from chapter one 'Of the Heavens and Air' of Robert Plot's (1640-1696) 'The Natural History of Stafford-shire' published in 1686. Plot recounts Wolferstan's observation of the solar rainbow in 1661 which is rendered in figures 1-4, as well as his experiments with lightening using a pair of globes affixed to his gate (fig. 5).
