Engraving, 250 x 160mm (9¾ x 6¼"), on 17th century watermarked paper. Narrow margin on right, lower right edge chipped in margins.
The engraved title of Michael Drayton's 'Poly-Olbion', with a female allegorical figure representing Great Britain, who is more of a pagan goddess than Britannia', within an arch with four soldiers. She holds a cornucopia and a sceptre, and her dress is representative of the fantastical maps that illustrate the book. Drayton (1563-1631) was a poet who was a favourite of Elizabeth but was less to the taste of the more dour James I. In 1612 he published his longest poem, 'Poly-Olbion, or, A chorographicall description of all the tracts, rivers, mountaines, forests, and other parts... of Great Britaine', with maps of England and Wales that did not mark boundaries, but contained allegorical figures of towns, hills, rivers and forests. A second, enlarged edition was published in 1622. Drayton was interred in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.
