A cricket match at Centre Vale School (now Fielden Hall), in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Alfred Walter Bayes (1832–1909), a former Schoolmaster who became an artist, even though it seems he received no formal training. He was a frequent exhibitor at the RA from 1858 to 1909. He also exhibited at the New Water-Colour Society, Royal Society of British Artists, Dudley Gallery, New Gallery, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.

Extremely rare. In 1611 a hospital for pensioners and a school for boys were established in buildings near Smithfield in London which had once housed a Carthusian monastery. Pupils have always been referred to as Carthusians. The School moved to the Deanery Farm Estate, just outside Godalming, in 1872, having sold part of the original site to Merchant Taylors.

The complete set of six landscapes, lacking the illustrated title, from a series also called 'Six studies from nature drawn and etched in imitation of chalk by William Crotch'. The BM examples, not printed on chine collé, has a date on the title of 1809 but Girtin's publication line dated 1810. William Crotch (1775-1847) was an infant prodigy as musician but also an amateur draughtsman and etcher.

A view looking down on the new Raglan Barracks, designed by Belfast-born engineeer and architect Francis Fowke (1823-65), built 1853-6. Only the main gate, shown here, survives. Later, as Superintendent of Buildings for ‘Albertopolis’, the cultural complex in South Kensington, Fowke designed the Royal Albert Hall (with Major-General Henry Y. D. Scott of the Royal Engineers) and parts of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Not everything he did was met with approval: his building for the the 1862 International Exhibition was described as 'a wretched shed' by The Art Journal.

Carriages gather outside Gidea Hall in Havering, during the visit of Marie de' Medici, mother of Queen Henrietta Maria and so the mother-in-law of Charles I. Having failed to keep political control after her regency for her son Louis XIII ended, Marie fled France. In 1638 she landed at Harwich and stayed at Gidea Hall on the way to London, where she was given St James's Palace as a residence. She stayed for three years before being driven out by a hostile population. From Jean Puget de la Serre's 'Histoire de l'entrée de la Reyne Mère dans la Grande Brétaigne'. Some plates have been attributed to Wenceslaus Hollar.
