A half length portrait of a man in a dark coat and cravat. The BM describes him as 'Major of the 54th Foot; MP for Berwick; Director of the East India Company', with dates 1764/5-1820. However his name does not appear in any list of Berwick-on-Tweed MPs or E.I.C. directors. A 'John Paul Addenbrooke' was a major in the 54th: his dates are 1753-1821) and his career included being Gentleman Usher to Queen Charlotte & Equerry to Princess Charlotte.

Ariosti was born in Bologna, but worked all over Europe, including Berlin, Venice, Paris & London, where he shared the directorship of the Royal Academy of Music with Handel and Bononcini. This portrait stresses that his favorite instrument was the viola d'amore.

He led the 1806 failed British invasion of Buenos Aires.

Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821 as the estranged wife of King George IV. Princess Charlotte of Wales, was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (later George IV), and Caroline of Brunswick. She was expected to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III, and her father, but died in childbirth at the age of 21, predeceasing them both.

Portrait of General Sir Hew Whiteford Dalrymple (1750-1830), Governor of Gibraltar. In 1808 he was made Commander of the Portuguese Expedition and immediately halted Wellesley's pursuit of the beaten French to Lisbon. He then chose to sign a truce with the French General, Junot, allowing him to return to France in British ships. The 'Convention of Cintra' was denounced both in London and in Portugal, and Dalrymple was forced to face an enquiry, after which he never held a field command again.

According to Alexander, Faber married Jane Oliver in 1738, at St Martin's in the Fields, about four years after he moved to his Bloomsbury Square address. As he was nearly 40 years old, it was unlikely to be his first marriage.

Oval portrait of the actress Lavinia Fenton (1708-60), with verse praising her performance as the original Polly Peachum in John Gay's 'Beggar's Opera', January 1728. In April she ran off with Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton; Gay wrote to Jonathan Swift: ''The Duke of Bolton, I hear, has run away with Polly Peachum, having settled £400 a year on her during pleasure, and upon disagreement £200 a year''. After waiting for the first duchess's death, Lavinia finally married him in 1751.

Philippe Mercier (1689 - 1760). Painter and engraver; pupil of Pesne in Berlin, then in Paris; London 1716. Remained in England for the rest of his life. Painter to Frederick Prince of Wales 1729-36; moved to York 1739-51; then returned to London, where he died. Main business in portraits, but made fancy pictures in the manner of Watteau for engraving.

Portrait of William Huskisson PC (1770 - 1830), British statesman, financier, and Member of Parliament for several constituencies, including Liverpool. He is commonly known as the world's first widely reported railway passenger casualty, since he was run over and fatally injured by Robert Stephenson's pioneering locomotive Rocket at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. However, a number of fatal railway accidents had already occurred before this.
