Tinted lithograph with touches of original hand colour, on three sheets conjoined, total 290 x 1750mm (11½ x 69"). Folded as issued, backed on linen.
A view of Santiago, the capital of Chile, from Santa Lucía Hill in the centre of the city. The touches of original colour highlight flags including two Chilean flags and a Stars and Stripes, clothing on the staffage and one cactus. The plate fails to be a true panorama by about 3cm, the width of one end margin. It was published in the first volume of 'The U. S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere, During the Years 1849-'50-'51-'52', titled 'Chile: its geography, climate, earthquakes, government, social condition, mineral and agricultural resources, commerce, etc.', written by James Melville Gilliss, superintendant of the expedition.

A collection of plates from the account of a tour in India by Godfrey Charles Munday (1804-1860), including tiger hunting from elephants and hunting with leopards. An army officer who served in India and Australia, he became Permanent Under Secretary for War during the Crimean War then Lieutentant Governor of Jersey.

A scene depicting a rat, full from stolen food. The Sultan approaches on the back of an elephant, adorned with beautiful blankets and goods, with him, his parrot, his favourite dog and a monkey. The rat having expressed that the elephant is a clumsy animal with little beauty, is paid for her excess as a cat catches her.

View of the 1812 Fire of Moscow; three officers on horseback occupy the central foreground, with the Ivan the Great Bell Tower to the left, and in the distance fire and smoke billow from behind churches and other buildings. On 14 September, during the French invasion of Russia, Napoleon led an army of about 100,000 into Moscow, only to find the city abandoned and deliberately set aflame by its military governor, Fyodor Rostopchin.

A panoramic view of the town of Nuremberg, with German key underneath. Publisher is the heirs of Weigel, presumably Christoph; the firm of Christoph Weigel was continued after his death by his widow, together with his daughter Barbara Sibylla and her second huband, Martin Tyroff whom she married in 1729. After the widow's death Tyrhoof carried on the firm using the term 'Cristoph Weigels Erben.'

A view of the Villa of Diomedes, an ancient Roman villa near Pompeii, Italy. The villa is located just outside the city walls of Pompei, at the Via dei Sepolcri to the Gate of Herculaneum. It was excavated by Francesco La Vega from 1771 to 1774 and named after Marcus Arrius Diomedes, whose grave is opposite the entrance to the villa, though it is not clear that it was his villa

Pliny the Younger (61 - c. 113), sits by his mother, writing his account of the eruption of Versuvius, which can be seen through the arch in the distance to the left.
