Half-length portrait of Charles Asgill (1762-1823) in his dress uniform. Asgill found fame when, having being taken prisoner at the surrender at Yorktown, he was sentenced to death by George Washington in retaliation for the death of an American captain at Loyalist hands. Asgill's mother appealed to Louis XVI, who sent an ambassador who successfully requested a reprieve. Asgill later wrote a letter to an American newspaper detailing the treatment he received in captivity, including beatings by drunken revellers who had paid money to enter his cell.

Portarit of Captain Sir Alexander Burnes FRS (1805 - 1841), Scottish explorer, military officer and diplomat associated with the Great Game. Burnes joined the army of the East India Company at sixteen and while serving in India, he learned Urdu and Persian, and obtained an appointment as an interpreter at Surat in 1822. He was nicknamed Bokhara Burnes for his role in establishing contact with and exploring Bukhara. His memoir, Travels into Bokhara, was a bestseller when it was first published in 1835.

After active service he became Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and lieutenant-governor of Guernsey from 1802 to 1813. A three-quarter portrait of William Harcourt (1743-1830), 3rd Earl Harcourt, seated in chair surmounted by a coronet, holding a large book propped upright on his knee. He wears a ceremonial robe over his uniform. A career soldier, Harcourt commanded his regiment at the Battle of White Plains and then captured General Charles Lee at Basking Ridge during the American Revolutionary War, and succeeded the Duke of York as commander of the British Army during the Flanders Campaign in 1795. This portrait was painted to celebrate him being appointed Governor of Portsmouth in July 1811. He was promoted to field marshal in 1821.

Infantry guardsmen demonstrate ten swordplay techniques: Lessons 1–8, shown on either side, each feature a lone Highland guard illustrating positions such as Outside Guard, Inside Guard, St George's Guard, Hanging Guard, Outside Half Hanger, Inside Half Hanger, Medium Guard, and Half Circle. Lessons 9 and 10, depicted at the top, show two figures in combat—one illustrating "The consequence of not shifting the leg," where a hussar is injured, and the other "The advantage of shifting the leg."

Half-length portrait of General Sir Lovell Benjamin Badcock Lovell (1786-1861), in huzzar uniform, an Indian camp scene behind. He holds the scabbard of his mameluke sword in one hand and his shapka in the other. Born Badcock, he assumed the surname of Lovell under royal sign manual in 1840. After fighting under General Auchmuty at Montevideo in 1807 and in the Peninsula War with the 14th Light Dragoons (being awarded the Peninsular Medal with eleven clasps, the most earned by a cavalry officer), he transfered to command the 15th Light Dragoons (later hussars). The regiment was stationed in India between spring 1840 and 1854, but in 1850 Lovell exchanged from the 15th Hussars to half pay with the 11th Hussars. He became major-general on 20 June 1854, and in 1856 was made KCB and appointed colonel of the 12th (Prince of Wales's) Royal lancers.

A half-length portrait in oval of Venetian general Francesco Morosini (1619-94), one of the leaders of the Great Turkish War, in which Venice captured the Morea from the Ottoman Empire. When he briefly captured Athens his forces accidently destroyed much of the Parthenon. The portrait predates his election as Doge in 1688.

An illustration from Clarke's 'Life of Wellington', depicting the siege of Seringapatam (5 April 4 May 1799) was the final confrontation of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Mysore. Two officers standing at left beside a flag-bearer, as troops storm through a large archway at right with Indian soldiers lined along the top of the walls.

Three-quarter portrait of Brigadier Thomas Fox Strangways (1790-1854) of the Royal Artillery, in uniform. a gloved hand on the hilt of his sword and the other holding his fur shapka. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 he was wounded so badly he was not expected to live. Nearly forty years later he was in command of the Royal Artillery during the Crimean War, when a shell took off his leg during the Battle of Inkermann, causing his death an hour later.

Full length portrait of Sir Henry Sullivan (1785-1814), 2nd Baronet, in uniform, his shako resting on a cannon. Despite being a soldier serving in the Napoleonic Wars, he was elected MP for both Rye and Lincoln in 1812. He stood down for Rye, but remained MP for Lincoln until his death, unsuprisingly playing little part in Parliamentary business. He was killed in 1814, during a sortie by the French garrison of Bayonne Thouvenot against the besieging British Army, despite the unofficial news of Napoleon's abdication reaching both sides. His memorial plaque is in the Church of St Nicholas, Thames Ditton, Surrey.

A satirical depiction of the British army in Spain shows overweight soldiers, exhausted after retreating from the French. Wellington (1769-1852) remarks to a particularly portly officer, “All Pod,” surprised at his survival. The officer, echoing Falstaff from Henry IV, replies that discretion is the better part of valour, and he preserved his life by taking “an Hour’s Law”, a head start like that granted to game in a hunt.

The scene portrays two sons of Tipu Sultan descending the steps of a palace toward a group of British officers. Tipu Sultan ascended to the throne of the South Indian kingdom of Mysore in 1782, where he established a sophisticated and modern court centered around his palace in Seringapatam. Renowned as the "Tiger of Mysore," Tipu was a formidable opponent of British expansion in India throughout his reign. He was ultimately defeated and killed during the British assault on Seringapatam on 4 May 1799. In the aftermath of his death, the British consolidated their control over Mysore, installed a compliant dynasty on the throne, and detained Tipu Sultan’s sons at Vellore Fort.
