A 'John Paul Addenbrooke' was a major in the 54th: his dates are 1753-1821) and his career included being Gentleman Usher to Queen Charlotte & Equerry to Princess Charlotte. Not in CS. Half-length portrait of Charles Asgill (1762-1823) in his dress uniform. Asgill found fame when, having being taken prisoner at the surrender at Yorktown, he was sentenced to death by George Washington in retaliation for the death of an American captain at Loyalist hands. Asgill's mother appealed to Louis XVI, who sent an ambassador who successfully requested a reprieve. Asgill later wrote a letter to an American newspaper detailing the treatment he received in captivity, including beatings by drunken revellers who had paid money to enter his cell. Whitman 20. Double portrait of Napoleon, after a drawing by Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824), who was closely associated with the emperor. He was commissioned to paint an allegory based on James Macpherson's Ossianic legends for Napoleon's country retreat at Malmaison, while Vivant Denon commissioned him to paint Napoleon receiving the keys to Vienna and the Revolt at Cairo (both now in Versailles). In 1812 he was commissioned to paint 36 portraits of Napoleon in his Coronation Robes for the Imperial Courts and had completed 26 by 1814, but the following year Napoleons abdicated for the final time and Girodet came into a considerable inheritance. Portrait, whole-length directed to right, looking ahead of her, right hand at her side, left hand on her crown which rests on a cushion next to crossed sceptres on a table to right, wearing coronation robes, with frills of lace at the elbows and neck, a rope of pearls around her waist, ermine lined cloak, which is spread over her throne behind her, hair dressed up with pearls. Crown decorated with fleurs-de-lis. Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz (1744-1818) was the Queen consort of the United Kingdom as the wife of King George III. This illustrious Lady was born about 1464, was married in the Reign of Edward IV, lived during the entire Reigns of Edward V, Richard III, Henry VII, Henry VIIII, Edward VI, Mary & Elizabeth. and died in the latter ed of James I. or the begining of Charles I.sts Reigns at the great Age (as is generally supposed) of 162 years.

A portrait of Katherine FitzGerald (c. 1504-1604) as an old woman. In 1529 she became the second wife of Thomas FitzGerald (1454-1534), 11th Earl of Desmond, producing a daughter (also Katherine). The earl's will granted her a life tenancy in Inchiquin Castle: when the 14th earl was attaindered in 1582 his land was granted to Walter Raleigh, who let her keep her tenancy, but suprised him by lasting longer than he expected. Raleigh helped popularise the nickname of 'the old Countess of Desmond' as a nickname for her, thus helping to creat her legend. Irish interest. Henry Pelham (c.1748 – 1806) was an American painter, engraver, and cartographer, son of Peter Pelham (c.1697–1751) and half-brother of John Singleton Copley (1738–1815).

He retired in 1858 and in 1864, the year of this portrait, he started to withdraw his money from the firm he helped found, Antony Gibbs, becoming the richest non-noble in England. He became a major benefactor of Keble College, Oxford. Gibbs rebuilt Tyntesfield, near Wraxall, North Somerset, now a National Trust property. Three-quarter length portrait of Admiral Thomas Griffin (1693-1771), standing turned to the right before a tree, his right elbow resting on a ledge and his left hand on his sword’s hilt. He faces the viewer, dressed in a richly brocaded suit with broad cuffs, a pale waistcoat, and a shoulder-length wig. In the background to the right, a ship sails on the water. Griffin was a Royal Navy officer who served in the War of Jenkins' Ear. He later became Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies Station. CS 54.

A three-quarter portrait of William Harcourt (1743-1830), 3rd Earl Harcourt, seated in chair surmounted by a coronet, holding a large book propped upright on his knee. He wears a ceremonial robe over his uniform. A career soldier, Harcourt commanded his regiment at the Battle of White Plains and then captured General Charles Lee at Basking Ridge during the American Revolutionary War, and succeeded the Duke of York as commander of the British Army during the Flanders Campaign in 1795. This portrait was painted to celebrate him being appointed Governor of Portsmouth in July 1811. He was promoted to field marshal in 1821. Whitman 128, i of ii. Ex: collection of The Hon.
