A Continental bagpiper, leaning against a tree, a copy of the 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer. This print is unusual as having female engraver (Eliza Smith, daughter of J.R. Smith) and publisher. See BM E,2.142 for Dürer's original engraving. Smith is not listed in Alexander's Dictionary of Engravers.

The British Museum's example (1891,0414.302) has a pencil note, 'Piano maker?', suggesting he is of the Kirkman/Kirckman family of harpsichord piano makers. Whitman 293, unlisted early state. A portrait of William Linley (1771-1835), aged about 18, hair down over his shoulders. He joined the British East India Company, working in India 1790-95 and 1800-05, holding a writership at their College in Madras. He retired from the company in 1810 and devoted himself to singing, composing glees and songs and writing literature. He bequeathed his collection of family portraits, including this one and one of his sister, Mrs Sheridan, to Dulwich Picture Gallery. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.
