Half-length portrait of Charles Asgill (1762-1823) in his dress uniform. Asgill found fame when, having being taken prisoner at the surrender at Yorktown, he was sentenced to death by George Washington in retaliation for the death of an American captain at Loyalist hands. Asgill's mother appealed to Louis XVI, who sent an ambassador who successfully requested a reprieve. Asgill later wrote a letter to an American newspaper detailing the treatment he received in captivity, including beatings by drunken revellers who had paid money to enter his cell.

He fought at Copenhagen (1807), in the Peninsula Wars, Quatre Bras & Waterloo, before turning to court, becoming an equerry to William IV in 1832, then Prince Albert in 1840, then Groom in Waiting in Ordinary to Victoria in 1846.

Half-length portrait of General Sir Charles Colville (1770-1843) in dress uniform. During the Napoleonic Wars he served in the West Indies (1791-7), the Irish Rebellion (1798), Egypt (1801, Martinique (1809), the Peninsular War (1810-1814) and the Waterloo Campaign of 1815. In 1819 he was promoted to lieutenant-general and sent to Bombay as commander-in-chief until 1825. From 1828 to 1833, Colville was Governor of Mauritius during a semi revolt by the inhabitants.

Head and shoulders portrait of soldier and politician Sir Henry Hardinge (1785-1856), his heavy coat open to reveal uniform and his medals from the Peninsular War and Waterloo campaign. At the time of this portrait he was MP for Launceston; he served as Chief Secretary for Ireland 1834-5, Secretary at War 1841-4 and Governor-General of India 1844-8. He ended his career as commander-in-chief of the British Army 1852-6, during which time he oversaw the running of the Crimean War, resigning because of ill health.

A half length portrait of Scottish soldier James Francis Edward Keith (1696-1758), in wig and armour. After participating in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and the abortive invasion of 1719, he escaped to the continent, eventually being made a field marshal by Frederick the Great of Prussia in 1747. He was killed in the Battle of Hochkirch, during the Seven Years War.

Half-length portrait of William Kingsley (c.1698-1769). In May 1745 he served at the battle of Fontenoy, where a cannon-ball passed between his legs and killed four men behind him. In the December of the same year, during the Jacobite Rebellion and the 'March to Finchley', he was sent to Northamptonshire by the Duke of Cumberland to obtain information of the enemy's movements. During the Seven Years war he distinguished himself at the battle of Minden on 1 August 1759, and was appointed Governor of Fort William in March 1760 but did not reside there as he was still on active duty against France, becoming Lieutenant General in December that year.

A collection of illustrations of the meagre defences of Lucknow during the siege (30th May to 27th November, 1857), when European and loyal troops of the East India Army held out against rebel sepoys outnumbering them 3 to 1. Mecham was an officer of the 52nd Madras Native Infantry.

This mezzotint seems to be an embellished version of the half-length portrait he painted in 1804, before Wellesley received the sash and star of the Order of the Bath (National Portrait Gallery NPG 1471).
