He became a member of the Supreme Council of India in 1819 and was Acting Governor General of India for seven months in 1823 between the depature of Hastings and the arrival of Amherst. During that time he moved to suppress the freedom of the Press, cancelling James Silk Buckingham's license for residence in India and passing regulations restricting newspaper criticism. At the time of this portrait he was MP for Launceston; he served as Chief Secretary for Ireland 1834-5, Secretary at War 1841-4 and Governor-General of India 1844-8. He ended his career as commander-in-chief of the British Army 1852-6, during which time he oversaw the running of the Crimean War, resigning because of ill health. Reginald Heber (1783-1826), the Church of England's second Bishop of Calcutta. His missionary hymn 'From Greenland's Icy Mountains', written in 1819 for a service in aid of the 'Society for the Propagation of the Gospel' in Wrexham, was widely sung until recently, but lost favour when it was denounced by John Betjeman and Gandhi as patronising, particularly the line ''the heathen in his blindness [bowing] down to wood and stone''. Other hymns, for example ''Holy, Holy, Holy'', remain popular. First published by Reynolds in 1824. Ex: Collection of Hon Christopher Lennox-Boyd. W.137.

A portrait of William Linley (1771-1835), aged about 18, hair down over his shoulders. He joined the British East India Company, working in India 1790-95 and 1800-05, holding a writership at their College in Madras. He retired from the company in 1810 and devoted himself to singing, composing glees and songs and writing literature. He bequeathed his collection of family portraits, including this one and one of his sister, Mrs Sheridan, to Dulwich Picture Gallery. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

A collection of illustrations of the meagre defences of Lucknow during the siege (30th May to 27th November, 1857), when European and loyal troops of the East India Army held out against rebel sepoys outnumbering them 3 to 1. Mecham was an officer of the 52nd Madras Native Infantry.

Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-59), historian, essayist and poet, published two years before he was raised to the peerage. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He served on the Supreme Council of India between 1834 and 1838: his 'Minute on Indian Education' (1835) encouraged the introduction of Western institutional education to India. A rare print: it was limited to 50 Artist's proofs and 50 proofs in this state. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.
