A half-length portrait of James Scott, Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685), depicted within an oval frame. He is shown wearing a long wig, a lace cravat, armour, and a sash. James Scott, the illegitimate son of Charles II and Lucy Walter, was introduced to court in 1662, where he quickly became a favorite of the king, who granted him the title of Duke of Monmouth. In 1663, he married Anne Scott, Countess of Buccleuch, adopting her surname (having previously been known as James Fitzroy or Crofts). He commanded troops during the Anglo-Dutch War of 1672-74 and later against Scottish rebels in 1679. After declaring his claim to the throne, he was banished that same year and again in 1684. Upon his father’s death, he returned and raised an army against James II, but was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor. James was executed by beheading on Tower Hill on 15 July 1685. CS 38.
