The Anglo-Indian Juggernaut or the Triumph of Civilization.
The Anglo-Indian Juggernaut or the Triumph of Civilization. A True Picture of Our Real Advancement.
Morris & Newman, 34 Booksellers Row, Strand. W.C. [n.d., c.1876.]
Rare wood-engraved broadside. Sheet 440 x 570mm (17¼ x 22½"). Splits in folds.
A satire comparing 'Pagan Laws' & 'Hindoo Morals' with British 'Civilization', published around the time Queen Victoria assumed the title of 'Empress of India'. The Governor-General of India (probably Robert Bulwer-Lytton, in office 1876-80) sits in a Car of Juggernaut topped with the Lion & Unicorn, and decorated with the ills of British society, including 'Outrage & Robbery', 'Drunkenness', 'Plunder', 'Wife Kicking' and 'Murder & Mutilation - Wainwright' (a reference to Henry Wainwright who was hanged for murdering and dismembering his mistress in 1875). The studded wheels are marked 'Taxes'. On either side is an Indian figure: one carries a sheet 'Touch Not Wine'; the other 'Love Your Wife & Family. Respect Old Age'. Underneath are four quadrains explaining the print.

Fine and rare mezzotint on chine collé. 250 x 355mm (9¾ x 14"), very large margins. Publication line printed over the edge of the chine collé.
Syllogistic disputants arguing over whether or not the Parisians are birds? It is a pun on Gallus a cock or a Frenchman? Two scholars in caps and gowns, leaning out dangerously from opposing lecturns, arguing angrily and gesturing to emphasise their points, their companions holding their collars to prevent them from falling out. Both companions hold bottles, one swigging from theirs. Welby Sherman (fl.1827-36) was one of the more obscure members of the Ancients, a group of artists who formed around the visionary artist and poet William Blake. He was a cousin and pupil of Samuel Palmer, another Ancient, living with him in Shoreham; this did not stop him swindling Palmer's brother William out of £500 in wagers on games of billiards and fleeing abroad in 1836. Damn Mambrino!

M.r Bunbury dek, J.s Bretherton f.
[n.d., c.1779.]
Etching. 250 x 185mm (9¾ x 7¼"). Trimmed to plate at sides, laid on album paper, foxing.
A seated fat man looks off to the right in disgust, having lost a wager, watched by his hunched dog. This satire was originally published in 1774 with the title ''Damn Bucephalus!'', probably inspired by the horse's close defeat by the famous Eclipse at Newmarket on 17 April 1770. Tim Clayton is quoted on the British Museum website: ''Lord Grosvenor's Mambrino had a highly successful career on the turf from 1773 to 1776 before being put out to stud; he attempted a comeback in 1779 which was unsuccessful. It appears likely, therefore, that Bretherton changed the title of the print from Damn Bucephalus! to Damn Mambrino! about 1779''.

[n.d., c.1801.]
Rare etching. Sheet 320 x 410mm (12½ x 16"). Trimmed within plate, repaired tear entering printed border at top.
George III hits Pitt on his shoulder with his sceptre and kicks him in the backside, causing the crown to topple from his head. The king sits at a table, on which is a paper he is signing, supposedly the Treaty of Amiens. A French satire making political capital by misrepresenting Pitt's leaving office as being sacked by George for opposing any peace negotiations with France, rather than him resigning for failing to achieve Catholic Emancipation. Pitt resigned on February 16th, 1801, during an episode of the king's madness; a preliminary agreement was signed in London on September 30th; the full Treaty of Amiens was signed at 3 a.m. on March 25th, 1802. George (BM Satire 9780) posits a publication date of May 1802; however the BM website states that 1801, during the negotiations, is more likely.

Sir George Augustus William Shuckburgh-Evelyn (1751-1804), M.P. for Warwickshire, in the white cap and robe with tricolour border (not obvious in this uncoloured impression) of a Judge of the High Court. The cushioned bench behind indicates the setting as the House of Commons. He never took part in debates, but by voting in the minority against the 'Assessed Taxes Bill' of 1798 (introduced by Pitt to pay for the Napoleonic War) earned this caricature: he is shown in the costume of a High Court judge, for which he obviously does not have the stature.
