The successful invasion of Dominica in June 1761 (not 1760 as in the title), towards the end of the Seven Years' War, the troops led by Andrew Rollo (the Brigadier-General in America), the ships by James Douglas (commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands Station). It shows The island remained a British possession after the war.

A scene of a carnival in Naples. The festival of the Looting of the Cuccagna (a dialect word for kitchen) took place in the Largo del Castello in Naples every Sunday during the Carnival. A cannon fired from the Castel Nuovo (seen here on the left) gave the signal for the people of Naples to storm the Cuccagna and carry away as much food as they could grab. From Jean Claude Richard Saint Non's monumental 'Voyage pittoresque ou description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile'.
The original black ink, wash and watercolour on paper is in Waddeston Manor, former home of the Rothschild family, now National Trust (Accession number 1034, Cat No 31). From the Airlie collection, C

A sketch of Kongsfjorden (mis-translated as King's Bay), Svalbard (Spitsbergen). The height of the peaks, including the Tre kroner, are not obvious until one spots the tiny schooner in the bay. Coal was discovered in the 1890s, and the British opened a year-round operation in Adventure Bay (Adventfjorden) in 1904; Kongsfjorden had a Norwegian mine from 1916-62. This scarce sheet is probably from a prospectus for a British company setting up operations.

The general map from Edward Granville Browne's 'A Year Among the Persians', showing his route from Kurdinstan to Terhran, Shiraz and Kerman, and across the sea to Baku. Browne (1862-1926) was a British Iranologist who spent a year there in 1887-8. This account was very favourable towards the Persians, who reciprocated their feelings: a Tehran street named after him and a statue survived the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

A classical column topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, in the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. The inscription states the column was originally part of the Temple of Peace built in Forum Boarum; however modern accounts describe it as the only surviving column from the nave of the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1349. It was brought to its current location by Pope Paul V in 1614, where it was placed on a base created by the great Baroque architect Carlo Maderno (1556-1629) .
