A very rare aquatint, fine impression; 265 x 380mm (10½ x 15"). Narrow margins, several tiny worm holes.
A merchantman under full sail in choppy seas. The Stars and Stripes flag on the stern is Francis Hopkinson's flag for the U.S. Navy, with 13 six-pointed stars in five rows and a red stripe uppermost, although the number of stars had increased to 15 in 1795.

Plate 30 of 'Liber Nauticus, and Instructor in the Art of Marine Drawing' by Dominic Serres and his son John Thomas Serres. Both were marine painters to the king, and John was the Master of Drawing at the Chelsea Naval School and, according to the title page of the 'Liber', 'Marine Draught-man to the Honourable the Board of Admiralty'.

The Battle of Bishops Court, in which privateer François Thurot's ships, the ships Maréchal de Belle-Isle, Terpsichore and Blonde, were brought to battle off the Isle of Man. After a close-fought action, Thurot's force was battered into submission, with his ships dismasted and reduced to a sinking condition. Thurot was hit by a musket ball and died during the action, with his body being thrown overboard. Around 300 of the French had been killed or wounded, while British losses amounted to four killed and 15 wounded on Aeolus, one killed and five wounded on Pallas and 11 wounded on Brilliant. Thurot's body was washed ashore at Port William and was buried with full military honours at Kirkmaiden, Galloway, Scotland. The Battle of Cap-Français (present day Cap-Haïtien, Haiti), during the Seven Years' War, in which Commodore Forrest was commanded to intercept a French convoy in the Caribbean, bound for France. By the time of the British attack, the French convoy had been reinforced. The outcome was tactically indecisive (contrary to the legend beneath this print), but the bravery of the British in fighting against heavy odds saw the battle remembered as a 'glorious action'. Plate 1 of a series of naval battles by marine painter Francis Swain (c.1719-82).

The interception of the French flagship Foudroyant by three British ships of the line, the Monmouth (firing at the Foudroyant in the centre), Swiftsure, and Hampton Court (both of which are on the right). The action took place during the Battle of Cartagena during the Seven Years' War in which a British fleet blockaded a French fleet off the Spanish port. The Battle of Dogger Bank was fought during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, started because the Dutch were supplying the Americans during the Revolution. It was fought between two fleets escorting convoys and, despite both sides claiming victory, it forced the Dutch fleet back into harbour where it remained for the rest of the war.

A trompe-l'œil medley print, with a central mezzotint printed over an engraving of proporting to be seven pieces of paper, stuck on a wooden wall by red sealing wax.. The mezzotint is of an Old Master-style Dutch drinker. The other images are two playing cards (front and back); a map of the Aegean; a scene of a 'triumphant' Russian standing over a vanquished Turk with a Greek watching; a scrap with French text relating to the war; and a naval battle engraving (The Battle of Chesme, June 24, 1770) and a German almanac title-page, both printed in sanguine. 'Royal George' was a short-lived name for the Royal Navy 100-gun ship of the line launched in 1675 as 'Royal James'. After the Glorious Revolution she was renamed 'Victory', then 'Royal George' in 1714, on the Hanoverian accession, but reverted to 'Victory' the following year. She burned to the waterline in 1721 and was broken up.

Plate 8 of the series 'Les Ports de France' after Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789), a painter famous for his maritime scenes. The details of the ships on the horizon have yet to be completed. The original oil is in the 'Musée national de la Marine', a part of the Louvre until 1971.
