Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark (1751-1775). The youngest child of Frederick, Prince of Wales, she married her cousin, Christian VII of Denmark, at the age of fifteen. After the birth of their first child, produced for the sake of the succession, Christian turned his attentions to a young courtesan, leaving Caroline unhappy and lonely. By 1770 she had taken Johann Friedrich Struensee, the new royal physician, as a lover, and as the king's health declined, their influence increased. However, in 1772, both were arrested, Struensee was executed soon after, and the marriage of Caroline and Christian was dissolved by divorce. She was deported on board a British Frigate and resided in Celle Castle (in Hanover, the territory of her brother, George III). her brother's territory of Hanover. She hoped to return to Denmark, but died suddenly of scarlet fever in 1775 at the age of 23. After the 1766 pastel by Francis Cotes (versions in Schloßmuseum Marienburg bei Nordstemmen and Nationalhistoriske Museum, Frederiksborg), probably executed shortly before Caroline Matilda's marriage to Christian VII. John Hawkesworth (c.1720- 1773), writer, compiled ‘An Account of the Voyages undertaken by order of his present Majesty for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...', 1773, which contained the official account of Captain Cook's first circumnavigation. Adverse criticism to the book affected his health and he died the year of publication. Here he is portrayed in his study. 'Ironically, the lasting popularity of ‘Hawkesworth's Voyages', as they soon came to be known, kept his name alive among general readers more successfully than anything else he wrote. But as a man of versatile talents who was widely read and a leading figure in the cultural life of eighteenth-century London, his virtual eclipse in the twentieth century seems curious' (DNB). Fine mezzotint of the Irish artist Nathaniel Hone's (1718-84) portrait of his son Horace, as the shepherd David, which was first exhibited to acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1771. Horace Hone himself became a notable miniaturist, who found employment at the court of George IV.

Sir George Howard (1718-1796), Field Marshal and politician. He participated in the American Revolution, and before attaining the rank of field marshal, he commanded various regiments, including the 3rd Regiment of Foot, the 1st Regiment of Dragoon Guards (the King's), and the 7th Regiment of Dragoons (the Queen's). He became field marshal on October 12, 1793, and was previously made a Privy Councillor and a Knight of the Bath. CS:76.ii
