[George, Lord Byron]
T. Phillips R.A. pinxit. C. Warren sculpsit.
[c.1824]
Line engraving on india with very large margins, proof before title; 270 x 170mm (10½ x 6¾"). Tipped into album sheet.
George Gordon Noel Byron (1788-1824), British poet and archetypal Romantic figure. Byron was celebrated in life for aristocratic excesses including huge debts, numerous love affairs, rumours of a scandalous incestuous liaison with his half-sister, and self-imposed exile. He travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died at 36 years old from a fever contracted while in Missolonghi, Greece. Engraved from the portrait by Thomas Phillips, which was undertaken as part of a commission by the publisher William Miller to paint the portraits of several poets whose works he published, the intention being to hang them together at Miller's house at 50 Albemarle Street, London. Annette Peach writes of the commission: "In 1813 Murray commissioned from Phillips a portrait of Byron (who brought the publisher more commercial success than any other of his writers), which still hangs over the drawing-room fireplace in Albemarle Street. The half-length view famously shows a pale-complexioned Byron in a white shirt with a large turned-down ‘Byronic' collar open at the neck to reveal his throat, and wrapped in a dark cloak. The dress and pose are identical to that of Charles Mayne Young in his portrait by G. H. Harlow (1809; Garrick Club, London), where the actor is portrayed as Hamlet, and it is possible that Byron saw Young perform this role. As in his portrait of Blake, Phillips's ability to convey the Romantic (and here self-dramatizing) cast of his sitter's imagination indicates that, although his œuvre is less flamboyant than that of his contemporary Sir Thomas Lawrence, he, too, was quintessentially a Romantic painter." The Cadogan Pier Cheyne Walk Chelsea.
N. Handford Esq. Archt. C. Warren, delt.
Published April 17th 1841, by T. Faulkner, Chelsea.
Very scarce lithograph, two perspectives (viewed from the bank and the river) printed on a single sheet. Tipped into album page, sheet 330 x 485mm (13 x 19").
There was insufficient accommodation on the riverbank for passenger steamboats in the 1840s and piers were built into the Thames to accommodate them. Cremorne Gardens had its own landing place, with a regular service from London. In 1840 Old Swan pier and Chelsea Mall pier served the steamboats, but by 1841 Earl Cadogan had erected Cadogan pier in Cheyne Walk, designed by N. Handford, catering for a large number of summer passengers. The pier was rebuilt c. 1875 to accommodate Albert Bridge. Perhaps from the architect's prospectus. Longford Images of Chelsea: 131.

John Hawkesworth (c.1720 - 1773), writer. He is said to have been clerk to an attorney, and was certainly self-educated. In 1744, he succeeded Samuel Johnson as compiler of the parliamentary debates for the Gentleman's Magazine. In company with Johnson and others, he started a periodical called 'The Adventurer', which ran to 140 issues, of which 70 were from the pen of Hawkesworth himself. Hawkesworth was a close imitator of Johnson both in style and thought, and was at one time on very friendly terms with him. It is said that he presumed on his success, and lost Johnson's friendship as early as 1756. Hawkesworth is most remembered today for his compiling of the three-volume 'An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...', which contained the official account of James Cook's first circumnavigation, on which Cook mapped New Zealand and the east coast of Australia accurately for the first the time. Among the allied plenipotentiaries at the signing of the preliminaries were Colonel Charles Whitworth and his colleague William Fawkener, Count Goltze (Prussia) and Count Osterman (Russia), but the figures are elegant puppets and can in no way be considered as portraits.''
