A patriotic allegorical plate published during the American War of Independence: Britannia sits surrounded by Roman gods. Bottom left is a scroll with a map of Cul de Sac Bay on St Lucia, commemorating the Battle of Cul de Sac (or Battle of St Lucia), 15th December 1778, in which the British drove off a French fleet attempting to stop the occupation of St Lucia.

Tiberius Cavallo (1749-1809), Neopolitan physicist and natural philosopher working in London from 1771. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1779, and gave annual Bakerian Lectures from 1780 to 1792. He is credited with the invention of 'Cavallo's Multiplier', an early electrostatic influence machine which could amplify a small electric charge to a level where it was detectable by the insensitive electroscopes of the day. Half portrait in profile of Italian historian Carlo Giovanni Maria Denina (1731-1813). Original from Turin Denina wrote several books on history, in 1782 he moved to Berlin on the invitation of Frederick the Great and then in 1804 he took up the post of imperial librarian in Paris on the invitation of Napoleon. Manuscript below the portrait states 'Of Turin where I knew him in 1764. he came afterwards into England'.
