A rare map of Balochistan, covering parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and southern Persia, marking the routes of Henry Pottinger and Captain Charles Christie as they mapped the region for the East India Company, amid concerns that Napoleonic France could invade India. Disguised as Muslims, they travelled together to Nushki before separating and taking different routes to Isfahan in Iran. Later Pottinger was appointent envoy and plenipotentiary in China, as which he negotiated the Treaty of Nanking (1842), ending the First Opium War and ceding Hong Kong to Britain. The following year he became the first Governor of Hong Kong, then Governor of the Cape Colony (1847) and Governor of Madras (1848-54).

Portrait of Samuel Argent Bardsley; nearly whole length, seated in chair, to the right, holding closed book in lap, with legs crossed; books and ink pots on table to his left; in octagon. Dr Samuel Argent Bardsley (1764-1851), the English physician. He was elected physician to the Manchester Infirmary, a position he retained until August 1823, gaining during the thirty-three years great esteem as ‘the very model of an hospital physician.’ Dr. Bardsley published in 1800 ‘Critical Remarks on the Tragedy of Pizarro, with Observations on the subject of the Drama;’ and in 1807 a volume of ‘Medical Reports of Cases and Experiments, with Observations chiefly derived from Hospital practice; also an Enquiry into the Origin of Canine Madness, which detailed research and study on rabies.’ To the ‘Memoirs’ of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, of which he was a vice-president, he contributed in 1798 a paper on ‘Party Prejudice,’ and in 1803 one on ‘The Use and Abuse of Popular Sports and Exercises.’ An expert on rabies. A half length portrait of John Bavin, more commonly known as 'College John', standing directed slightly to the left, facing the viewer. A figure in academic dress can be seen on the steps of the collge entrance in the background to the left. Bavin was a porter at St Peter's, Westminster whose responsibilities would have varied from controlling entrance to the college, to maintenance and repairs. The Royal College of St. Peter in Westminster, better known as Westminster School, is one of the original nine British public schools (the so-called 'Clarendon Schools') as defined by the Public Schools Act of 1868. Henry Bone (1755-1834), was an enamel painter who he moved from Cornwall to London in 1779 where he worked on jewellery designs and the enamelling of watches and fans. He began to exhibit miniatures at the Royal Academy in 1781. He executed many beautiful miniature pieces of much larger size than had been attempted before in England. Among them are copies of eighty-five portraits painted during the time of Queen Elizabeth I that are considered among his greatest works.

Thomas Edward Bowdich (1791-1824), traveller in Africa. He entered the service of the African Company of Merchants in 1814 and was sent to Cape Coast. In 1817 he, William Hutchison and Henry Tedlie were sent to meet the king of Ashanti, and through diplomacy increased British influence over the coast natives. Returning to London he published an account, 'Mission from Cape Coast Castle to Ashantee, &c', in 1819, and publicly attacked the management of the African committee, leading the British government to assume direct control over the Gold Coast. Bowdich presented his African collections to the British Museum. In 1823 Bowdich and his wife spent several months travelling down the west coast of Africa, via Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands, before landing at Bathhurst (Banjul), intending to explore the interior of Sierra Leone. However he died of malaria before he could set out. His widow, Sarah, published an account of this abortive trip, 'Excursions in Madeira and Porto Santo . . . to which is added A Narrative of the Continuance of the Voyage to its Completion'.

James Cook (1728 - 1779). The son of a Yorkshire labourer, Cook learned his seamanship on small East-coast traders. Although only a warrant officer, he was chosen to command the Endeavour in 1768. He made three important voyages of discovery to the South and North Pacific - charting land, sea and stars - and was the first British captain to land in Australia. George Eden, Earl of Auckland (1784-1849), politician and governor-general of India 1837-40. In later years Auckland served as first lord of the Admiralty, and is credited with reforming the Admiralty during this period and enabling it to effectively conduct the Crimean War a few years later. This large portrait was published shortly after Auckland's death. Auckland, New Zealand was named after him.

John Kyrle (1637-1724) was an English philanthropist, known as "the Man of Ross", remembered for his time in Ross-on-Wye. He took a huge interest in the development of Ross; in the education of the children and in improving the town. He was behind the establishment of 'The Prospect', a public garden. His main focus throughout his life was to better the life of working people and encouraging self-respect.

Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), French painter, archaeologist and traveller. He had a brilliant career as an artist and diplomat under the ancien regime, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Diderot, Voltaire, and Robespiere. He followed Napoleon on his campaign in Egypt, making over 150 sketches (now in the British Museum) which, reproduced in his book 'Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte' (1802), the first serious description of the antiquities discovered in Egypt, were influential in establishing the Egyptian Revival style in France. In 1802 he was appointed director-general of the Imperial Museums, playing a key role in bringing foreign masterpieces into the Louvre. He played a crucial role as artistic adviser to Napoleon, selecting artworks to requisition and handing out commissions to artists. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815 he retired, and spent his last ten years engraving and working on a general history of the arts.

The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales. A portrait of Hugh Williamson (1735 - 1819), an American politician. He was best known for representing North Carolina at the Constitutional Convention. Williamson was a scholar of international renown. During the American Revolution, Williamson contributed his talents as physician and natural scientist to the American war effort. His experiences transformed the genial scholar into a politician and a determined leader in the campaign for effective national government.
