Lithograph on india laid paper, proof before letters, india 245 x 200mm. 9¾ x 8". Rather soiled.
Ernest I (1784 - 1844), was the duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, then from 1826 the first sovereign duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (in the present-day states of Bavaria and Thuringia), Germany. According to a pencil note lower right, the portrait is after William Ross, miniature painter, and lithographed by John Samuel Templeton (c.1830 - c.1857; fl.).
