A seated portrait of Thomas Hawksley (1807-93), F.R.S., painted as past President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Specialising in water and gas supply, he was the first engineer to adopt pressure grouting to control water leakage under an embankment dam for reservoirs. The original oil, painter by Hubert von Kerkomer in 1887, was donated to the National Portrait Gallery by his son in 1974.
