Thomas Francis Fremantle (1798-1890), 1st Baron Cottesloe. MP for Buckingham from 1826-46, when he resigned to serve as Deputy Chairman, then Chairman, of the Board of Customs. In 1874 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Cottesloe in recognition of his services.

A small girl balances a sugar cube on the nose of a dog much larger than her. The girl was one of the nine children of Charles Churchill (1823-1905) a City timber broker who bought Weybridge Park in 1863. Another of his children was the subject of Barber's 'In Disgrace'. This is from one of numerous child and dog paintings executed by Charles Burton Barber (1845-1894) towards the end of his life. He attained great success with his paintings of children with their pets; during his life he received commissions from Queen Victoria, and a number of his portraits are in the Royal Collection.
