After Rev Matthew William Peters (1742 - 1814), partner to 'Of such is the kingdom of God'. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales.

Banditti scene after John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79), published soon after the artist's death. Influenced by the works of Salvator Rosa (immensely popular during the period), Mortimer incorporated Rosa's disturbing banditti and occult subject matter in the 1770s. This print is usually regarded as a generic banditti scene: a preparatory drawing in the collection of Richard Payne Knight (now in the British Museum) was etched by Robert Blyth and published in November 1780 with the title 'Banditti Returning'. However, a related painting by Mortimer (Newcastle, Hatton Gallery) is titled 'The Sacrifice of Polyxena'. In Euripides' plays, Polyxena was sacrificed at the end of the Trojan War to appease the gods.

The Battle of Cap-Français (present day Cap-Haïtien, Haiti), during the Seven Years' War, in which Commodore Forrest was commanded to intercept a French convoy in the Caribbean, bound for France. By the time of the British attack, the French convoy had been reinforced. The outcome was tactically indecisive (contrary to the legend beneath this print), but the bravery of the British in fighting against heavy odds saw the battle remembered as a 'glorious action'. From of a series of prints made from paintings recording celebrated naval battles by marine painter Francis Swain (c.1719-82) which were probably reduced copies of other engravings issued by the same publisher

Engraved by the prolific early mezzotinter John Smith after Egbert van Heemskerck (1634/5-1704). Born in Haarlem, Heemskerck moved to England in the 1670s. His often satirical genre scenes (Quaker meetings were a speciality), derived from those of Ostade and Teniers, were popular with London engravers.
