A pair of engravings from the English edition of 'Tabulae Sceleti et Musculorum Corporis Humani', by German born Dutch anatomist Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (originally Weiss) (1697 - 1770). Plate 1a depicts a full length frontal view of a flayed body, in a landscape. Its left arm is extended, illustrating the muscular form of the body. Carved into a rock behind is 'Bern Siegf Albini Tabulae Anatomicae Musculorum Hominis'. Plate 5 shows the reverse of Plate 1a, a full length posterior view of a flayed body with its left arm is extended, displaying the muscular structure of the human form.

A three-quarter portrait of composer Attilio Ariosti (1666-1729), seated with his elbow resting on a harpsichord and his left hand on a viola d'amore. Ariosti was born in Bologna, but worked all over Europe, including Berlin, Venice, Paris & London, where he shared the directorship of the Royal Academy of Music with Handel and Bononcini. This portrait stresses that his favorite instrument was the viola d'amore.

Paintings on the walls behind: a view of ruins, the Last Day, a jester enthroned and blowing bubbles, sages either side and cherubs playing with the bubbles. Two lines of quotations either side of title. After Robert Smirke (1752 - 1845) for a series of scenes from Shakespeare plays after paintings in Boydell's 'Shakespeare Gallery', which opened in 1789 in Pall Mall.

A cavalry battle, with the riders firing pistols, drawn and engraved by Claude Simonin (c.1635-1721), an engraver and designer of ornamental gunfittings. It was published in 'Plusieurs Pieces et Ornements Darquebuzerie', a collection of designs for ornamental fittings on guns. Originally published in 1684 as a set of eight plates, an enlarged edition of 13 plates was published by Parisian gunmaker Laurent le Languedoc in 1705. Another expanded edition was published about 1776 by Gilles-Antoine Demarteau (this plate without the privilege, as per Metropolitan Museum 2011.310.1–.13). On the reverse is Moncornet's portrait of 'Henry Duc de la Trémoille et de Thouars Pair de France'.

Francis Beaumont (1584-1616), English Renaissance dramatist and poet most famous for his collaborations with John Fletcher. He had a stroke while still in his twenties, after which he wrote no more plays. This portrait was originally one of four on one plate engraved by John Simon, along with Fletcher, John Milton and Abraham Cowley, for the series 'Poets and Philosophers of England'. For this second state the plate was cut down and a new title engraved.

A head and shoulders portrait of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde (1610-1688) wearing long wig and armour within an ornamental border. An Anglo-Irish statesman and soldier, Butler commanded the Royalist forces against the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and went into exile with Charles II. After the Restoration, Ormonde became a major figure in English and Irish politics, holding many high government offices.

John Hamilton Mortimer is the intermediary in this instance taking a drawing from the painting by Cignani. "The Most Capital Paintings in England" series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three (1769 to 1773) originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), Soldier and statesman. Rising to become a confidential agent of James, Duke of York, Churchill managed to play a major role in crushing the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion when James became King in 1685. Just three years later he abandoned his Catholic king in favour of the Protestant William of Orange. His influence at court reached its height with the accession of Queen Anne. Promoted to Commander-in Chief of the allied forces, he achieved huge victories against the French in the War of the Spanish Succession. However, the increasing unpopularity of the war and Marlborough's arrogance contributed to his dismissal by Anne in 1711. He eventually regained favour with the accession of George I in 1714.

Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744). The wife of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough; Sarah Jennings was appointed Lady of the Bedchamber in 1683, and became a close friend and advisor to Queen Anne. Vivacious and adept at politicking, she used her position to further the military career of her husband. Eventually in 1711, her self-confident dominance of the Queen provoked a quarrel and estrangement, and both she and the Duke were dismissed from their offices.

James Craggs the Younger (1686-1721). Part of his early life was spent abroad, where he made the acquaintance of George Louis, Elector of Hanover, afterwards King George I. In 1713 he became member of parliament for Tregony, in 1717 Secretary at War, and in the following year Secretary of State for the Southern Department. Craggs was implicated in the South Sea Bubble. Among Craggs's friends were Alexander Pope, who wrote the epitaph on his monument in Westminster Abbey, Joseph Addison, and John Gay.

William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt (1743-1830) was a Field-Marshal and M.P. for Oxford. He was a British commander during the American War of Independence, and aide-de-camp to Lord Albermarle in Havana in 1762 during the Seven Years' War. While in Havana he sketched this view of what is now the Almendares River, a 45 km river in the western part of Cuba. It was one of the first settlements in Cuba and source of Havana's water supply. Etched by George Simon, [Viscount Nuneham] 2nd Earl Harcourt, [1736 - 1809] politician, statesman and gifted amateur.

George went on to be MP for St Albans before taking the title 2nd Earl Harcourt; William stayed in the army, becoming a commander in the American War of Independence, succeeding his brother as 3rd Earl Harcourt.

Juan Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, was commissioned to design the structure. When it was built in 1589, Cuba was under the control of Spain. The castle, named after the biblical Magi, was later captured by the British in 1762. Field Marshal William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt, GCB [1743 - 1830] was an English nobleman and soldier. He was the younger son of Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl Harcourt. As a young man he took "an ensigncy" in the First Foot Guards Light Dragoons, in October 1759. The regiment had been raised at his father's expense and was known as Harcourt's Black. In 1760 Harcourt was sent to Mecklenburg-Strelitz to escort to England the consort-elect of George III and he was appointed to a post in the Royal Household. He was aide-de-camp to Lord Albemarle at Havana in 1762. Brother of George Simon, [Viscouint Nuneham] 2nd Earl Harcourt.

Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne (1572-1654) was a Swiss-born physician who treated kings of France and England and advanced theories of Paracelsus. Mayerne's estate included copious amount of medical manuscripts, including detailed notes about his patients, most of it in Latin and French. His patients ranged from John Donne to Oliver Cromwell. His influences included the first suggestion of socialized medicine in England and the standardisation of chemical cures.

Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723), the penultimate Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany, who 53-year reign included reactionary laws including one that prohibited Christians working for Jews. By the time of his death, thanks to him and his profligate wife (Marguerite Louise d'Orléans, a granddaughter of Henry IV of France), Tuscany was left one of the poorest nations in Europe.
