Barabbas and two other thieves are restrained and in cuffs, and appear to be surrounded by a number of soldiers in the background. According to the Synoptic Gospels, Barabbas, imprisoned for murder and insurrection against the Roman state according to Mark and Luke, was released by Pontius Pilate according to a Passover tradition whereby a prisoner could have their death sentence communted by popular demand. The story goes that the crowd of Jewish people ask for Barabbas's release, thereby condemning Jesus to death, though the plausibility of Barabbas's release is contested by some historians.

A full length portrait of James Buller (1772-1830), dressed for the coronation of George IV. He was MP for West Looe at the 1802 & 1806 general elections, before leaving Parliament and serving as the Clerk in Ordinary to the Privy Council from January 1812 until his death in 1830. From Sir G. Nayler's "The Coronation of His Most Sacred Majesty King George the Fourth, solemnized in the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter Westminster upon the Nineteenth Day of July MDCCCXXI". Nayler only published two of the five proposed parts (1823 & 1827); it was completed by George Henry Bohn and issued in 1837.

A half-length portrait of James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), in naval uniforum. The American author, best known for the romantic novel 'The Last of the Mohicans', went to sea in 1806, aged 17, on a merchant ship, before serving in the US navy 1808-10. The original portrait was painted in 1822 by his friend John Wesley Jarvis (c.1780-1839), a member of Cooper's famous 'Bread and Cheese Club'. Described by Cooper's wife as her favourite portrait of her husband, it now resides in the Fenimore Art Museum.

H.R.H.Frederick Augustus Duke of York & Albany [1763-1827] was appointed colonel of the 2nd Horse Grenadier Guards (now 2nd Life Guards) in 1782, and promoted major-general and appointed colonel of the Coldstream Guards in 1784. He was created Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster on 29 November 1784 and became a member of the Privy Council.Famed as the 'The Grand Old Duke of York' Frederick was the second son of George III. He was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, between 1798 and 1809. Unsuccessful in the field during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, he is better remembered for putting down corruption in the administration of the army. In 1809, he was dismissed from office after revelations that his mistress Mary Anne Clarke had been selling army commissions. This portrait shows his stolling on the Horse Guards Parade.

Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) was one of the greatest and most original of all English watercolourists. He was a friend, rival and later an inspiration to Turner, with whom he closely worked. He died aged just twenty-seven, shortly after completing his most ambitious and spectacular work, the Eidometropolis, a 360-degree panorama of London measuring over 100ft.

Henry Grattan (1746 - 1820), a member of the Irish House of Commons and a campaigner for legislative freedom for the Irish Parliament in the late 18th century. Although he opposed the Act of Union 1800 and suffered polically for it, he eventually took a seat in the British House of Commons. He was buried in Westminster Abbey close to the tombs of Pitt and Fox. Much of the plate is unfinished, including his face, hands & stockings.

A full length portrait of a young man in tartan coat and trousers, with broadsword and horn on his belt, a pistol, targe and dirk on the ground. Although the print identifies him as Charles Edward Stuart (1720-88, the 'Young Pretender'), it is in fact Thomas Osborne (1713-89), Earl of Danby, later 4th Duke of Leeds and 3rd Viscount Dunblane. The painting, the property of the 10th Duke of Leeds, was sold at Christies in 2005.

Sarah Trimmer (1741-1810), author and educationist. The only child of artist Joshua Kirby and his wife Sarah Bull, Trimmer was raised in London where her father's acquaintances included Hogarth, Gainsborough and Reynolds. Initially concerned with the education of her own children, Trimmer went on to establish a Sunday School in Old Brentford where she lived, and a weekday school of industry for girls. She published widely, including children's books and volumes on educational methods, many of which continued to be reprinted after her death as she exerted a strong influence in the early nineteenth century. Engraving after the portrait by Henry Howard now in the National Portrait Gallery. Trimmer, a devout evangelical Anglican, rests her left arm on the Bible.

'The Expedition of Humphry Clinker' was the last of the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett, first published in 1771, and is considered by many to be Smollett's best and funniest work. The title character is a stableman at an inn who, after various romantic interludes, suffers false imprisonment but is rescued and returned to his sweetheart, the maid Winifred Jenkins.
