Francis Beaufort (1774-1856), naval officer and hydrographer, creator of the Beaufort wind scale. Early in his career at sea Beaufort's gallant record and scientific talents made him well known throughout the navy. In 1817 he published a record of his survey and exploration of the southern Turkish coast (then little known to Europeans). In 1829, at the age of 55, Beaufort became the Hydrographer of the British Admiralty, remaining so for 26 years, charting the seas to make them safe for the increasing amount of British and foreign shipping. Beaufort converted a minor chart repository into the finest surveying and charting institution in the world. Some of his excellent charts are still used, 200 years after he created them.

A transparency, coloured stipple with etching, the figures coloured on the reverse, the partridge and lanterns treated with varnish. Varnish on the partridge darkened, with slight cracking of the paper.

A rare mezzotint. 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾"). Tear into inscription area, surface crack, glue stains in left margin.
A middle-aged dandy made an April Fool. He stands, waistcoat and trousers bulging, waiting in vain at a country turnstile while two young women, obviously the senders of the letter in his hand, peer over the wall. This print was advertised as 'newly published' by the Monthly Literary Advertiser May 1838.

John Freeth (1731-1808), was an English inkeeper, poet and songwriter; he published work under the pseudonym John Free. As the owner of Freeth's Coffee House between 1768 and 1808, he was a major figure in the political and cultural life of Birmingham during the Midlands Enlightenment. He composed the song "Birmingham Lads" for the opening of the Birmingham Canal in 1769 using Charles Dibdin's tune for 'The Warwickshire Lads' which had been composed earlier that year by David Garrick for the Shakespeare Jubilee celebrations. The canal halved the price of coal in Birmingham.

The Martyrs of Gorkum, a group of 19 Dutch Catholic clerics and friars who were hanged in the town of Brielle in 1572 during the wars of religion in the Low Countries. They were beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1865. Italian engraving showing the martyrs being hanged in a turfshed. Letterpress key identifying each of the martyrs in the image.

A portrait of Thomas Gosden (1780-1843) carrying a gun, accompanied by his two dogs. Gosden was a book and printseller, publisher and sportsman, working from Piccadilly, 'The Sportsman's Repository' at 18 Bedford Street in Covent Garden and 107 St Martin's Lane at various times. He published at least three contemporary versions of this portrait, but this version probably appeared in the 'Sporting Magazine'.

Pen & ink drawing on two sheets, 275 x 220mm (10¾ x 8¾") Trimmed and glued to card.
7 out of 10 verses of the song/poem by James A. Sidney illustrated/engraved by J.D Scott plate 17 out of 77. The original verses 3 regarding Old Marmion, 5 regarding Bonaparte and 9 regarding London being in Spain are missing suggesting a local bias. The text and Music is transcribed in School of Scottish Studies (in its entirety) and published in Robert Ford's 'Vagabond Songs and Ballads' Volume 1 1899. The style of the "Tableau" is similar to J.D Scott's 'Combination Atlas Map of Bucks County, Pennsylvania' 1876 indicating that this might also be his work. This would have been a popular item at the time when Irish schoolmasters were "in vogue" particularily in the USA.

Portrait of Vice-Admiral Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure CB (1807 - 1873), Irish explorer who explored the Arctic. In 1854 he traversed the Northwest Passage by boat and sledge, and was the first to circumnavigate the Americas.

A woman in fine dress kneeling to fire an arquebus, aided by a maid. The print was published as the frontispiece of the Sporting Magazine of January 1841. According to the text the image is reproduced from a Persian drawing belonging to Major Napier. The woman is described as a 'Lady of the Zenanah of the Schah'.

A working pointer. Thomas Gosden (1780-1843) was a book and printseller, best known for being 'The Sportsman' painted by Benjamin Marshall, carrying gun, accompanied by his two dogs, one perhaps this pointer.

Welsh Moutain Ponies.

Welsh mountain ponies are known for their good nature; their movement is bold and free, and often characteristically fast, especially at the trot. The Welsh Pony is reputed to be trustworthy and to have a good disposition, but is also spirited and enduring. They are known for their stamina and soundness; they generally have even temperaments and friendly personalities. They are usually easily trained, in part due to their high level of intelligence.
