William Aikman (1682-1731), was a portrait painter who studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He took up a career as an artist and, by 1703, was painting portraits professionally in Edinburgh. He sold his family estate near Arbroath to enable him to travel unfettered to Europe to complete his artistic training. Aikman spent three years in Rome, before visiting Turkey and then spent a further period in Rome. He returned to Scotland in 1712, where he made the acquaintance of the poet Allan Ramsay and found an enthusiastic patron in John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, who persuaded Aikman to move to London. He established a distinguished portrait practice in London, portraying royalty and many members of the aristocracy.

Francis Beaufort (1774-1856), naval officer and hydrographer, creator of the Beaufort wind scale. Early in his career at sea Beaufort's gallant record and scientific talents made him well known throughout the navy. In 1817 he published a record of his survey and exploration of the southern Turkish coast (then little known to Europeans). In 1829, at the age of 55, Beaufort became the Hydrographer of the British Admiralty, remaining so for 26 years, charting the seas to make them safe for the increasing amount of British and foreign shipping. Beaufort converted a minor chart repository into the finest surveying and charting institution in the world. Some of his excellent charts are still used, 200 years after he created them.

Howard experienced imprisonment himself in France in 1756. It was not until 1773 when he became High Sheriff of Bedfordshire that he initiated an important campaign to transform prison conditions. He spent a lot of his time visiting prisons in Britain and Europe, leading him to write his influential book "The State of Prisons", first published in 1777. A highly reserved man, Howard shunned public recognition throughout his life.

On trial for 'coining' (counterfeiting) in 1714, Jane Housden was being brought down to the dock when William Johnson, a butcher with a conviction for highway robbery (although pardoned), tried to talk to her. When the gaoler Spurling told him he would have to wait until the trial was over Johnson pulled a pistol and shot him dead. Housden's trial was halted and both tried for murder and convicted. Despite having the entire court as witnesses for the prosecution, both continued to deny the offence until their executions on the 14th September. On trial for 'coining' (counterfeiting) in 1714, Jane Housden was being brought down to the dock when William Johnson, a butcher with a conviction for highway robbery (although pardoned), tried to talk to her. When the gaoler Spurling told him he would have to wait until the trial was over Johnson pulled a pistol and shot him dead. Housden's trial was halted and both tried for murder and convicted. Despite having the entire court as witnesses for the prosecution, both continued to deny the offence until their executions on the 14th September.
