Frontispiece to 'Septimana Philosophica' (or 'The Philosophical Week') by Michael Maier (1568-1622), German physician, alchemist, epigramist and composer who became physician and imperial counsellor to Rudolf II in 1609. The book discusses the secrets of the universe over the course of a week. Engraved by the Frankfurt-based printmaker Balthasar Schwan (d.1624).
