A portrait of George, Prince of Denmark (1653 - 1708). Head and shoulders, wearing an embroidered scarf and a long curly wig; within an oval. Second son of Frederick III of Denmark Prince Georg married the future Queen Anne in 1683. When Anne became Queen (1702) he was appointed Lord High Admiral and General of all English forces. Godard van Reede-Ginckel, first earl of Athlone (1644-1703), army officer. Born in Utrecht in the Netherlands (where he continued to spend much of his time when not fighting), Ginckel accompanied William to England in 1688 and fought by the new king's side at the battle of the Boyne. In 1690 was made commander of the king's army in Ireland, and between 1690 and 1692 led it to a series of victories at Ballymore, Athlone, Galway and Limerick. Returning to England in 1692 Ginckel was raised to the Irish peerage and given 40,000 acres of land in Ireland (which he sold at a knockdown price before William's grants of Irish land were reversed by the English parliament in 1700). Between 1692 and his death he was present at several important battles on the continent. Panoramic view in Goa, on the west coast of India, with some native inhabitants in the foreground, one riding an elephant. Portuguese first landed in Goa as merchants, in the early 16th century, and conquered it soon thereafter. The Portuguese overseas territory existed for about 450 years, until it was annexed by India in 1961. Engraved and published in Amsterdam by Pieter Schenk (1660 - 1718/1719). Titles in Dutch, to left, and Latin. Plate to Schenk's 'Hecatompolis' (1702), which included one hundred profile views of cities throughout the world.

A scene of the Battle of Grengam fought on 7 August 1720, the last major naval battle in the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia (1700-1721). Four Swedish frigates were captured by the Russian Navy by the end of the battle.
