John Paul Jones (1747 - 1792), American revolutionary war naval officer and hero. Jones' spectacular, well-publicized exploits helped to give the American Revolution credibility at a time when international support was crucial. His popularity in France made it easier for Louis XVI to support a colonial rebellion, and his notoriety in Britain undercut public support for an increasingly unpopular war.
