A caricature of Thomas Bentley LLD (1693 - 1742), classical scholar, probably on his grand tour 1725-6. After Pierleone Ghezzi (1674 - 1755), caricaturist and etcher who worked in Rome. It was used by Hogarth for his plate 'Characters and Caricaturas' to exemplify the difference (as Hogarth saw it) between the caricature of Ghezzi, Leonardo et al, and his own delineation of character. Portrait of Robert Bragge, a famed London art dealer and connoisseur who held numerous auctions during the 1740s and 1750s. Etched by Arthur Pond after Pier Leone Ghezzi (1675-1755), regarded as the first professional caricaturist. Based in Rome, Ghezzi moved freely amongst the Italian nobility, even associating with Pope Clement XI. His satirical portraits include one of Vivaldi and several British grand tourists. A bearded man wearing a hat shouts at another, who is seated wearing glasses. Etching after Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), Italian painter who is also generally credited with the invention of caricature. Etched by the British artist Arthur Pond (1701-1758) and published in a series of 'Caricaturas' he produced from 1736 to 1747. The plates were subsequently acquired by the publisher John Boydell, who advertsied sets of the prints in his 1807 catalogue. Hake: 71.

Arthur Pond (1701-1758) was a British painter, engraver, print-seller, dealer and collector. He studied with John Vanderbank before entering St Martin's Lane Academy in 1720. He visited Italy in 1725-7 with George Knapton, John Dyer and Daniel Wray. This print, one of three produced by Pond from caricatures by Maratti, derives from a drawing by sold through Christies in 1988. The British Museum have drawings by Hugh Howard, who studied in Italy with Maratti (1697-1700) which may have been the basis for Pond's prints. Hake: 89.
