The titlepage to a set of ten scenes from the life of Tommaso Aniello (abbreviated to Masaniello, 1620-47), by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) Masaniello was a fisherman and smuggler who led a revolt against the Spanish Habsburg rulers of Naples. After taking the city he started behaving irrationally and was killed by his fellow citizens.

A Roman soldier commands Archimedes to come and meet Gerneral Marcellus, but he declines, as he is too busy working on a problem. Enraged, the soldier kills Archimedes with his sword. On the right an assembly of scientific items and charts. From Pinelli's series of 100 plates illustrating the the history of Republican Rome, as told in Charles Rollin's 'Istoria Romana'.

In Hannibal's vision he sees a giant serpent as a winged Mercury leading him to Italy. Mercury tells Hannibal that in the same way the serpent lays waste to mountians, Hannibal will lay waste to Italy. Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) is best known for his images of contemporary Romans, many of which were incorporated into Luigi Rossini's Views of Rome. He has taken inspiration from 'Storia Antica E Romana Di Carlo Rollin'.
