The Foundling Hospital was founded in 1739 in London, north of Great Ormond Street and west of Gray's Inn Lane, by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram. It was a children's home established for the 'education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children.' The plate engraved by Nathaniel Parr (fl.1723 - 1760) after Louis Philippe Boitard (1733 - 1767; fl.) in 1753.

It was destroyed in the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), but reconstruction work has begun recently. In distinctive decorative border, from George Henry Millar's 'The new and universal System of Geography, being a complete history and description of the whole world. ...' 1782.

Nineteen etchings with original stitching, each sheet 305 x 225mm (12 x 9). Mint condition, very large margins. Mint condition.
Volume of military prints designed by Charles Parrocel (1688-1752), twelve of which are etched by J.G. Wille and the remainder by Parrocel himself. The set appears to be made up of prints from two different publications, 'Recueil de 19 Planches Différentes études de Soldats' (etched by Parrocel) and 'Reitres et Lansquenets' (etched by Wille after Parrocel). Like his father Joseph, Parrocel was principally a painter of battles and hunts. He was present at several battles during the War of the Austrian Succession which he intended to depict in a series of pictures for the chateau of Choisy (although he only completed two, now at Versailles).

The Edinburgh Charity Poorhouse in Port Bristo was built in 1739-1743 by Samuel Neilson, mason, and William McVey and James Heriot. It was financed by voluntary subscriptions. Funds for its operation were raised by a variety of means such as a tax on the valued rents of the city, collections at church doors, charitable donations and other contributions including and annual benefit play at one of the city’s theatres. It was a substantial establishment that, in 1777-8, could accommodate 484 adults and 180 children.

Elegantly dressed figures gather in the large open space of the Rotunda, with a large extravagant fireplace in the centre, musicians playing in stands far right. Ranelagh Gardens, adjoining Wren's Chelsea Pensioner's Hospital, opened in 1742 and quickly exceeded Vauxhall in popularity for a place to escape the city and take in the cleaner air in Chelsea. Elegantly dressed figures gather in the large open space, a large extravagant fireplace in the centre of the room, musicians playing in stands far right. Ranelagh Gardens, adjoining Wren's Chelsea Pensioner's Hospital, became popular as a place to escape the city and take in the cleaner air in Chelsea. Balls, concerts, dinners and of course gossip were shared here almost daily. It quickly exceeded Vauxhall in popularity, but it's popularity waned until the season of 1804 when the fashionable set abandoned it entirely.
