Alexander Nasmyth's famous portrait, which was painted so that it could be engraved for the 1787 second edition of 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'. His oil is now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (PG 1063). Engraved by Robert Bowyer Parkes (1830-1904)

Rare mixed-method engraving, proof before publisher's address, on chine collé, signed by the engraver, 400 x 470mm (15½ x 18½") with large margins. A little surface abrasion to the backing paper.
A young girl kneels to hug a long-haired St Bernard dog in the corridor of Batersea Dogs Home. This was published the year that Queen Victoria became the first royal patron of the home, a tradition that has continued.
