A sketch map of William Hanning's suggested 'New Direct Road' between Andover and Honiton, ''beneficial... in quickening the Conveyance of Letters, Parcels, and Passangers, to and from the Western Ports' and 'expediting the March of Troops'. The difference between the old route (via Salisbury, Blandford, Dorchester, Bridport and Axminster) and the new (Amesbury, Deptford Wincanton, Ilchester and Ilminster, with a proposed new coaching inn and a new section of road between Ilminster and Honiton) was seven miles. The new route is now the A303.
