George Anson's fleet anchored in Puerto San Julián in Argentina, while they refitted one of their ships, Tryal, and reprovisioned themsleves with salt prior to their attempt to round Cape Horn. George Anson's circumnavigation, 1740-44, was one of the last great buccaneering voyages, an official expedition to the South Seas to harass the Spanish bases but, more importantly, plunder their shipping. A main target was one of the richly-laden Manila galleons that crossed between Acapulco in Mexico and Manilla the Philippines. A woman sitting in the mouth of the cave, washing clothes in a tub, watched by a young girl. To the right is a bed, a carved chest and other household possessions, suggesting they were living in the cave. The view is considered to be of Gough's Old Cave which in 1834 was occupied by Suckey Weeks, aged 63, and her son Jack, then aged 26. The legend surrounding Suckey Weeks suggests that she was thrown out of her home having disgraced herself by marrying beneath her station. She is said to have fled to Cheddar and lived in the cave where her child was born.

This was the frontispiece to Fothergill's 'Some Account of the late Peter Collinson' 1770.

Stanhope was ambassador to The Hague from 1728, and was subsequently rewarded with the Order of the Garter and the position of Lord Steward. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1745 and Secretary of State in 1755. Chesterfield married George I's daughter Petronilla Melusina von der Schulenberg, a marriage which brought a windfall that Chesterfield put towards completing the magnificent house shown here. Situated on South Audley Street in London's Mayfair, then directly facing Hyde Park, it was given its grand opening in 1752. Demolished in 1937, the house was replaced by a block of flats appropriately named Chesterfield House.
