A view using Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original design, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. The bridge's foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 years in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864.
