John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650 - 1722), was an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. Honoured for his services at William's coronation with the earldom of Marlborough, he went on to have a brilliant military career which culminated during the reign of Queen Anne when he won the Battle of Blenheim during the War of Spanish Succession. Portrait in an oval ,decorated with leafy branches, on a square frame with plaque below.

Elizabeth Gunning (1733-90) met James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Argyll, at a party in London. Robert Walpole reported that he insisted that they marry that night, and called for a local parson to perform the ceremony. However, without a license, calling of banns and a ring, the parson refused, so they married that night in Mayfair Chapel. Her sister Maria (1733-60) was also a beauty who married well, in her case George William Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry. Andrew Miller (d.1763), was an engraver in Dublin. Challoner Smith notes 'Nearly all the prints by Miller are of very great rarity' (p.921).

Lucas began as an apothecary in Dublin; however he published a number of pamphlets decrying the corruption of Dublin's aldermen, for which he was threatened with prosecution for seditious publications. Rare tinted lithograph. Sheet 285 x 400mm (11¼ x 15¾"). A little creasing.
Ocean Monarch, an American emigration barque built by Donald McKay in East Boston in 1847, left Liverpool for Boston on the morning of 24 August 1848. Just outside harbour the ship caught fire, driving the passengers to the ship's bowsprit, from which many jumped into the sea. 178 lives were recorded lost. The scene was sketched by François d'Orléans, Prince of Joinville (1818-1900) was the third son of Louis Philippe, King of the French. Leaving France in the aftermath of the 1848 Revolution, he was aboard the Brazilian frigate 'Affonso' (seen here flying the Brazilian flag).
