L'Amour en Ribote [The Drunken Cupid; in image, to banner cartouche upper left.]
['peint par Eisen Père - Gravé par L. Halbou.]
[A Paris chés Basan Graveur n.d., c.1760.]
Rare engraving, proof before letters, sheet 455 x 335mm. 18 x 13¼". Trimmed to plate.
This scene was painted with a companion "Les dragons de Vénus". Three figures framed by a carved masonry or wooden border. A latter-day cupid, a portly young male with bow and quiver of arrows over his shoulder perched on the lintel, talks to two young ladies, earnestly entreating them for more wine from the bottle that one lady holds. This cupid seems already somewhat inebriated, and the woman holds the bottle away from his outstretched hand, while he holds up an empty glass in his left hand. A potted vine laden with grapes grows against the left side of the frame, while an arrow pierces a heart lower right. Painted by François Eisen, engraved by Louis Michel Halbou and published by Pierre François Basan, this appears to be a rare engraving: according to their website catalogue the Bibliothèque nationale de France hold only a photomechanical reproduction of this image.

Annibal Caracci Pinxit. I.B. Michel Sculpsit.
John Boydell excudit 1778. Published May 1st. 1778, by John Boydell, Engraver, in Cheapside London.
Stipple engraving, 295 x 255mm. Light surface soiling.
Clytia (or Clytie) was a water nymph, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys in Greek mythology. She was loved by Apollo. Apollo, having loved her, abandoned her for Leucothea and left her deserted. She was so angered by his treatment that she told Leucothoe's father, Orchamus, about the affair. Since Apollo had defiled Leucothoe, Orchamus had her put to death by burial alive in the sands. Clytie had wanted Apollo back and had wanted to win him back by taking away his new love, but her actions only hardened Apollo's heart against her. She sat naked, with neither food nor drink, for nine days on the rocks, staring at the sun, Apollo, and mourning his departure. After nine days, the suffering turned her yellow and brown, and she was transformed into a sunflower (some researchers claim heliotrope or marigold), which turns its head always to look longingly at Apollo's chariot of the sun. This story is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses.

[n.d., 1743.]
A rare & fine engraving. Sheet 500 x 865mm (19¾ x 34") Trimmed within plate.
A scene representing Love's triumph over learning, glory and the arts, one of seven cartoons drawn by Carlo Cignani (1628-1719) for the fresco decorations on the walls of a room in the Palazzo del Giardino at Parma. Venus sits holding Cupid in her arms as her triumphal chariot (drawn by two young satyrs and two putti with their hands tied behind their backs) crushes a book, an eagle standard, a sword, a pair of compasses, a laurel-wreath and a palette. The procession is headed by a winged youth playing a harp and includes the Three Graces. Cignani's frescoes were begun in about 1678 and survive today, although they suffered damage in the Second World War. The cartoons came into the possession of Joseph Smith (1682-1770, the British consul at Venice, 1744-60, and patron of Canaletto) in the 1730s, where Jean Michel Liotard saw them and engraved them for his 'Monochromata Septem Caroli Cignanti Bononiensis', as this print. The cartoons were bought by George III in 1762 and are now in the Royal Collection at Hampton Court.

Scarce engraving. Sheet 270 x 330mm (10½ x 9"). Trimmed within plate on three sides, pair of tiny worm holes in title.
A reduced copy of John Singleton's Copley's painting, 'Watson and the Shark' as engraved by Valentine Green and published in 1779. The scene actually depicts the shark attack on Sir Brook Watson (1735-1807), 1st Baronet, as a boy that resulted in the loss of his right leg below the knee. This happened when he was swimming alone in Havana harbour, Cuba, in 1749. Watson was a British merchant, soldier, and later Lord Mayor of London. Watson and the artist John Singleton Copley met in 1774: some say they travelled on the same ship from Boston to England, and some that they met in London. Whatever the circumstances of their meeting, Watson commissioned Copley to produce the work, known as Watson and the Shark which was completed in 1778. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778 and caused a sensation. Upon Watson wife's death the painting was bequeathed to Christ's hospital which was accepted in 1819, however was purchased by the National Gallery of Art Washington, D.C in 1963.
