A portrait of Lady Charlotte Fermor (1725-1813), painted by John Robinson. As Robinson died in 1745 the portrait was probably painted on her betrothal to the Hon. William Finch (1691–1766), who she married in 1746. She served as governess to the children of King George III and Queen Charlotte for over thirty years, holding the position from 1762 to 1793.

Thomas Major studied in Paris under Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-83), tutor to many of the century's best engravers. Examples of Wouwerman's work could be found in the leading 18th century collections of Dutch and Flemish masters in both France and England. The subject of a riding school was one he tackled many times in his career. The painting was in the collection of Marc-Rene de Voyer, 3rd Marquis d'Argenson (1722-87) who had become a friend after his father, the 2nd Marquis, had helped to secure Major's release from the Bastille where he had been incarcerated shortly after his arrival in Paris. On Major's return to England he developed a reputation as one of the best engravers of his day.

The trade card of the Marine Society, a charity founded in 1756 by Jonas Hanway (1712-86), to encourage young men to go and join the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Later the Scociety turned to the education of poor boys in preperation for their joining the navy, as depicted here. Ragged boys are being directed to Britannia outside the Marine Society's Warehouse, where they are dressed as cadets. As well as founding the Marine Society in 1756, Hanway was a vice president of the Foundling Hospital, instrumental in the establishment of the Magdalen Hospital and a commissioner for victualling the navy (experimenting with ways to alleviate scurvy amongst seamen). He is said to be the first male Londoner to carry an umbrella, facing down heckling hackney coachmen.
