Portrait of Giuseppe De Begnis (1793 - 1849), bass opera singer. In 1816 he married the noted prima-donna and famous beauty, Signorina Giuseppina Ronzi. They sang throughout Italy with great success, and in 1819 made their first appearance at the Italian opera in Paris, remaining three seasons. In 1821 they came to London, Begnis debuting there as Don Geronio opposite his wife's Fiorilla in Rossini's 'Il Turco in Italia' at the King's Theatre on May 19, 1821. They continued to appear in opera together until their separation in 1825. Begnis remained at the King's Theatre until 1827, but also served as an opera manager in Bath (1823-24) and later in Dublin (1834-37) before settling in New York.

Alexander Trotter carrys a kilted Lord Melville on his shoulders, menaced by curling waves, in which is a large foaming tankard of 'Whitbread Entire' and fish with the heads of judges. Although Trotter declares he will be safe, the inference is that Melville is in serious trouble. A satire on the impeachment of Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, for irregular financial dealings as Treasurer of the navy, begun by Samuel Whitbread. Alexander Trotter (1750-1830) was Paymaster to the Navy in 1805, and so involved with the corruption, but was given immunity in return for testifying.

The Royal Masonic School for Girls is an independent school in Rickmansworth, England with both day and boarding pupils. The school was instituted in 1788, with the aim of maintaining the daughters of indigent Freemasons, unable through death, illness, or incapacitation to support their families. Today, the school accepts the children of both masons and non-masons. It began in 1789 with fifteen pupils and a Matron in Somers Place, East London. During its history, the school has moved premises three times, twice within London and finally in 1934 (the date of this etching) to Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire, where it still is today. Possibly the etcher is landscape painter Charles Knight (1901 - 1990), who was Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society 1961-64.

A rare pair of scenes after Henry Singleton (1766-1839) which contrast British wealth with food shortages in India at a time of famine in Bengal between 1769-1770. 'British Plenty' shows a single seaman between two women who, although they appear to be selling the man vegetables, are marked as prostitutes by their fine dresses. In contrast, 'Scarcity in India' depicts two young Englishmen offering cheap trinkets to a young Indian girl outside an impoverished village.

A girl and child by foliage laden with grapes or berries; in the second image four children, the nearest playing a lute with her back to the viewer, with two boys opposite singing from sheets of music, and a younger child to right playing a triangle. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales.
