Son of George II, The Duke of Cumberland commanded the allied forces during the War of Austrian Succession (1740-48). 'William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, at the Battle of Dettingen' is the title of the painting done for Frederick, Prince of Wales by John Wootton [1682?-1764] and Thomas Hudson [1701-79] in 1744. This painting is in the Royal Collection.
