Stanfield Hall, Norfolk was the home of Isaac Jermy, Esq, who on the night of November 28th, 1848, stepped outside to smoke, unaware of a strange figure hiding in the bushes. The air was then filled with two shots, whereby he fell to the ground, mortally wounded. The others rushed out of the dining room, and with three more shots, Isaac's son, wife, and a servant fell to the ground. One of the other servants later recognised the murderer as James Blomfield Rush, the family's bailiff. Rush had reneged on previous loans and agreements with Isaac and now his major debt was due for repayment on 30 November, two days after the murders took place. Blomfield was hung for his crime on 21 April 1849.

Rush had mortgaged and re-mortgaged his farm several times and with time running up and he hadn't raised the funds to repay the loans, facing eviction he came up with a plan to try and defraud the Jermy's of their property and lives. He was hanged in Norwich Castle in 1849.

HMS Terrible was a steam-powered wooden paddle wheel frigate, designed by Oliver Lang and launched in 1845. After active service in the Crimean War she helped the SS Great Eastern to lay the first successful Atlantic cable in 1866. She was broken up in 1879.
