He was appointed Commander-in-Chief Pacific Station in 1844, Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station in 1851 and Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth in 1856. He was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet in 1866.[

A group of villagers outside 'Sundial Cottage', George Stephenson's home at Killingworth Colliery, where he built his first steam locomotive, the 'Blücher', in 1814. A basic locomotive can be seen outside the cottage, and a more advanced model crosses the stone bridge in the far background, representing the North-Eastern Line to Scotland. The group is discussing Stephenson: one woman reads the 'London Journal', containing Stephenson's portrait and a man holds a 'Geordie' lamp, Stephenson's safety-lamp for miners. Derived from a diminutive form of the inventor's name, it is said that the name lead to Tyneside miners also being called Geordies.

George Benjamin Maule (1811-50), barrister. An inveterate traveller, Maule was travelling across Spain in treacherous conditions when his stagecoach was swept off of the road, killing Maule and his fellow travellers.

George Shaw (1751-1813), natural historian. This portrait celebrates his authorship of the multi-volumed 'General Zoology', begun in 1800 but left unfinished at his death. Below the portrait is a view of the British Museum, where Shaw was appointed assistant keeper of the natural history section in 1791, before being promoted to keeper in 1807. It was at his residence at the museum that Shaw died in 1813. This print was published as a plate to Robert Thornton's 'New Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus' (popularly known as the 'Temple of Flora') in 1803.

He was in government office almost continuously from 1807 until his death in 1865, beginning his parliamentary career as a Tory and concluding it as a Liberal. He served successively as: Secretary at War (1809-28); Foreign Secretary (1830-41 and 1846-51); Home Secretary (1853-5) and Prime Minister (1855-8 and 1859-65). He is best remembered for his direction of British foreign policy through a period when the United Kingdom was at the height of its colonial power. His vigorous policy of intervention, often controversial at the time, made him one of the greatest Victorian statesman and among the most powerful figures in European politics. After Sir Francis Grant (1803-1878).
