Abu Simbel, one of Egypt's top tourist attractions, built by Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. This view is of the main hypostyle hall, showing the eight statues of Ramesses dressed as Osiris, half-buried in sand. In 1968 the whole complex was moved to an artificial hill to raise it above the water of the artifical lake created by the Aswan Dam. Published in the monumental folio edition of 'Egypt & Nubia: from drawings made on the spot' by David Roberts (1796 - 1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe. This example comes from the library of Sir Richard Hungerford Pollen (1815-81), 3rd Baronet of Redenham, an amateur artist listed as a subscriber to this work. However this is not a hand-coloured subscription plate but is still an early printing, one issued in wrappered parts prior to the bound First Edition.

Roberts did not have his pencil, so he reconstructed this scene from memory. Although this was an informal meeting, the Europeans were worried that Mehmet Ali was going to declare independence from the Ottoman Empire. The following year (1840) the British Navy blockaded the Nile Delta, forcing Mehmet Ali to accept a compromise, in which he was given hereditary rule of Egypt as an Ottoman viceroy. Published in the monumental folio edition of 'Egypt & Nubia: from drawings made on the spot' by David Roberts (1796 - 1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe.

The expedition led to him describing the Permian geologic period, named after the Perm region of Russia, the last period of the Paleozoic era.

The illustrated titlepage of 'Sketches in Afghaunistan' by James Atkinson (1780-1852), 'Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus, Bengal Division' during the ill-fated British expedition into Afghanistan (1838-42). A Persian scholar and linguist, Atkinson has been described as 'a Renaissance man among Anglo-Indians'. Because of his languages he met many of the Afghan protagonists, including both Shah Shoojah-ool-Moolk and Dost Mohammad Khan. Fortunately he left the British garrison in 1840 to take another post, thus avoiding the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842. In his book 'The Expedition into Afghanistan', also published 1842, he compared the British presence in Afghanistan to Sisyphus rolling his stone up the hill.

As it appeared from Pile Hill, during the dreadful riots on the night of Sunday October 30.th 1831, when the New Prison and Two Toll Houses, seen on the left of the Picture, the Bishop’s Palace near the Cathedral in the centre, the Mansion House, Custom House, Excise House, and nearly Fifty Dwelling and Ware-Houses in Queen Square & Streets adjacent occupying the distance beyond Redcliff Church on the right (exclusive of the Bridewell and Lawfords Gate Prisons which do not fall within the limits of the Picture) were plundered & burnt and property to the amount of nearly One Hundred Thousand Pounds sterling totally destroyed.
