Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), engraved from a sketch in profile by Thomas Phillips made in 1802, the year of the Treaty of Amiens which temporarily ceased hostilities between Britain and France. The resulting Peace of Amiens, which lasted until May 1803, was the only period of peace during the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815). During this time, Phillips was commissioned by the Duke of Northumberland to paint Napoleon, and spent three months in Paris. Due to the circumstances of their execution, Phillips' likenesses are almost unique as sympathetic British likenesses of Napoleon.

Admiral Sir Henry Ducie Chads, GCB (1788-1868) was an officer in the British Royal Navy who saw action from the Napoleonic Wars to the Crimean War. He entered the Royal Naval Academy at 12 years of age, and in 1803 embarked aboard the 74-gun ship of the line HMS Excellent, sharing in the defence of Gaeta and the capture of Capri. He later distinguished himself at the occupation of the Île de la Passe, gateway to the Île de France. In 1823, he was prominent in the expedition against Rangoon, as a result of which he was made Post Captain, created C.B. and received the thanks of the Government of India, and praise in the British House of Commons. In 1841-5 he was on the Chinese station in command of HMS Cambrian, and then commanded the Royal Navy's gunnery school HMS Excellent. Chads reformed the whole system of naval gunnery, both as regards weight of metal and rapidity of fire. He was promoted Rear Admiral in 1854 and was third in command of the fleet sent to the Baltic under Sir Charles Napier, who claimed that Chads ‘knew more about gunnery than any man in the service'. He was one of the leaders in the bombardment and capture of the fortress of Bomarsund. He struck his flag in 1855, and as a reward for his services was created a K.C.B. From 1856 to the end of 1858, he held the command-in-chief in Ireland and in 1865 was created G.C.B. and received the Admiral's good service pension.

In 1781 he became Rector of Caistor in the diocese of Norwich; in 1805 he was appointed Domestic Chaplain to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales (afterwards George IV). He died at Caistor in 1821, aged 78.

William Smith (1756-1835) was a politician of great power and change. He was a friend and close associate of William Wilberforce and was at the forefront of many campaigns for social justice and prison reform but most notably was his campaign for the abolition of slavery. In 1790 he supported Wilberforce in the slave trade debate and once the trade had been halted he helped Zachary Macaulay in 1823 found the ‘London Society for the Abolition of Slavery in our Colonies', thereby launching the next phase of the campaign to eradicate slavery. His involvement in the French Revolution was controversial, and he swiftly gained a reputation as a radical. He secretly arranged several meetings between William Pitt and Maret, Napoleon's foreign minister, in a desperate attempt to avoid war.
