The British West Africa Squadron was established in 1808, its primary role being to suppress any activity by British slavers. In 1841 the English brig Acorn having perceived at great distance a vessel pillaging another, made chase, and instantly the Gabriel hoisted all her sail, and endeavoured to escape but eventually the Gabriel was dismasted, and captured. She was sent to St Helena, but her crew, consisting of fifty- eight men, Spaniards and others, were put on board an English vessel at Rio. The captain jumped overboard during the chase, with all his papers and the merchandise found on board the Gabriel was valued at roughly £35,000 of today's money.

The Acorn had not time to ascertain to what country the vessel which was being pillaged by the Gabriel belonged, but she carried English colours. Captain Blay also reports that the English merchants resident at Rio have presented Captain Lecosannet, of the Roland, with a handsome gold chronometer and snuff box, and given to each of his crew a hundred francs, in testimony of the sense entertained of their humanity in saving the crew and passengers of the India.

The Ambassador tea clipper sailed between the chinese port of Fuchow and London, once doing so in 108 days (1872). The schooner yacht Cambria, of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, won the "great ocean race" of 1870 against the American yacht Dauntless, from Daunt Rock, Queenstown, Ireland, July 4th, to Sandy Hook on the New Jersey coast, USA - arriving July 27th. The Dauntless was commanded by James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841 - 1918), publisher of the New York Herald and the youngest Commodore ever of the New York Yacht Club. A portrait of the SS Ceylon, a single-screw, iron-hulled auxiliary steamer, at sea. Built by P&O in 1858 for use on the regular service from Southampton to Malta and Alexandria, the ship was sold in 1881 to the 'Inter-Oceanic Steam Yachting Company Limited', who advertised a round-the world cruise later that year, believed to be the first to be offered commercially. However, even after a refit to improve the luxury, it proved impossible to entice enough people to take a long cruise for fun and the IOSYC went into receivership. The 'Ceylon' was sold, to be bought by the Regent Street Polytechnic (noew Westminster University) and used for educational cruises, mostly to Norway and the Baltic until 1907.

The Coonatto, a three-masted ship of 633 tons, built in London by Thomas Bilbé in 1863. Used as an Australian wool clipper, the name is an Aboriginal word for a food-bearing tree. In 1876 the Coonatto ran aground on rocks under the Seven Sisters in Sussex, where some of her iron remains can still be seen at low tide. Her captain, Captain Hillman, had his certificate suspended for three months for negligence, although there was speculation he wrecked the Coonatto for insurance money. However as his next ship, the 'Inch Kenneth' foundered the following year, killing Hillman, it would seem he was just inept.

Admiral Sir Charles John Napier (1786-1860) was a Scottish naval officer whose sixty years in the Royal Navy included service in the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War and the Crimean War. At the outbreak of the Crimean War, Napier received command of the largest fleet with the Royal Navy had assembled since the Napoleonic Wars, and it was sent to act in the Baltic Sea. It was in 1854, aboard HMS Duke of Wellington that Napied hoisted his flag, joined by Rear-Admirals Armar Lowry Corry, Henry Ducie and James Hanway Plumridge. Despite the lack of men and particularly experienced seamen, Napier, augmented by the French fleet sent by Napoleon III, managed to overawe the Russian Baltic fleet, so much so that they did not leave their moorings.

It was in 1854, aboard HMS Duke of Wellington that Napied hoisted his flag, joined by Rear-Admirals Armar Lowry Corry, Henry Ducie and James Hanway Plumridge. Despite the lack of men and particularly experienced seamen, Napier, augmented by the French fleet sent by Napoleon III, managed to overawe the Russian Baltic fleet, so much so that they did not leave their moorings.

The 'Duncan Dunbar', built at Sunderland for Duncan Dunbar & Co, was launched in 1857 and engaged in the passenger and cargo trade between England and Australia. In October 1865, on route from London to Sydney with seventy passengers (including thirty-five women and children) and a crew of forty-seven, she ran on to Rocas Shoals off Cape San Roque. Attempts were made to back her off, then float her free by throwing cargo overboard, but by next flood tide she had canted over and filled. At dawn the entire ship's complement landed safely on a small section of the reef which remained above high water, and over the next few days the three boats which remained intact were used to land stores from the wreck. Meanwhile, Captain Swanson, the mate and seven seamen had left in one of the boats to obtain assistance at Pernambuco. They were picked up by the American ship Hayara and dropped near Pernambuco where they obtained help from the British Consul. On 17 October the Royal Mail Packet steamer Oneida sighted the castaways, took them on board and landed at Southampton about three weeks later. Very scarce pair with Brazilian interest.

A portrait of HMS Monarch, designed by Sir Edward Reed and launched 1868 as the first seagoing British warship to carry her guns in turrets. The ship is shown taking leave of the Channel fleet to cross the Atlantic with the remains of George Peabody (1795-1869, American merchant regarded as the father of modern philanthropy) to the United States for burial, with USS Plymouth (seen to the right). It was Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone who assigned Monarch, the newest and largest warship of the Royal Navy, demonstrating British respect for Peabody. In 1862 George Peabody creates the Peabody Trust. He donates £150,000 increasing to £500,000 to build affordable houses for the "artisan and labouring poor of London". The Peabody Estates still exist and have over 220,000 members.

After an illustrious career, bringing to England the Prime Minister of Nepal, the first hippopotomus since Roman times and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the 'Ripon' was scuttled off Trinidad in 1880. The Indus was converted to a sailing ship in 1863 and became a coal supply ship.

Iron screw steamer, built by Messrs. Money Wigram & Sons, of Blackwall, for their own service to Australia in 1867, a vessel of 2,342 tons gross, which was regarded as one of the finest steamers of her day. She cost over £70,000 to build, and on trial she managed 10¼ knots which was considered very good at that time. In the early 'eighties, she was sold to J.R. Renner of Liverpool, converted passed into the hands of the Norwegians and was posted missing in summer of 1898.
