Two of the children of William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, with a dog: the eldest son Jeffrey (1802-26) and Sarah Elizabeth (1801-76). Jeffrey died suddenly in Barrackpore, while his father was leading the Anglo-Burmese War (1824-6); Sarah also travelled to India with her parents, being a painter and botanical illustrator, known under her married name of Hay-Williams. This portrait was painted while Amherst was ambassador-extraordinary to the court of the Two Sicilies, 1809-11. Challoner Smith suggests this plate was never published.

From this Drawing Mr. Basire the Engravr, began a Print but the death of Mr. Hogarth prevented its being finished.

An illustration of a dramatic scene from Giovanni Boccaccio's celebrated medieval novel, 'The Decameron'. The heroine, Sigismunda, holds a goblet sent to her by her father, Prince Tancred. Inside, is the heart of her dead husband, Giuscardo, one of Tancred's servants. He has murdered him, enraged by their unsuitable secret marriage. This was Hogarth's most deliberate attempt to prove that modern English painters could handle heroic themes as convincingly as the revered Italian old masters. But the picture received such harsh criticism that he almost completely abandoned painting for the last years of his life. For an open letter proof impression, see item ref: 36640.

Henry Frederick Stuart (1594 - 1612), first child of King James VI of Scotland (later King James I of England) and Anne of Denmark, was born on February 19, 1594, at Stirling Castle in Scotland. The pride of his parents, the heir apparent was groomed for kingship from the beginning. Henry was created Prince of Wales at Westminster in June 1610, the paragon of a prince: he was intelligent, well read, an excellent swordsman, an avid patron of the arts, and possessed of a strict sense of morality. In November 1612 Henry suddenly took ill and died, probably of typhoid fever, though rumours circulated that the Prince was poisoned. Here he is depicted in armour during a lance drill, a jousting tournament in the background. A copy of the engraving by Willem de Passe, by Robert Dunkarton (1744 - c. 1815). From a series of 15 copies of early engravings, 'Portraits of Royal Personages', by Turner, Earlom and Dunkarton, issued by Samuel Woodburn in book form in 1816. Another edition was published in 1830.

A three-quarter portrait of Tory politician Robert Hobart (1760-1816), 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire. In 1794 he was appointed Governor of Madras, in which post he remained until 1798. He later served as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1801-4, as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1805 and 1812, Postmaster General 1806-7 and as President of the Board of Control from 1812 until his death in 1816. Because he gave Governor King instructions to found a settlement at Port Dalrymple, North Tasmania, the town was given the name Hobart. The plate was originally engraved by Joseph Grozer, but was reworked by Dunkarton when Hobart became earl.

A portrait of Mary Horneck (c.1752-1840) kneeling, wearing a turban and a long dress with a sash tied around the waist. The portrait, painted by Reynolds c.1770-5, is at Cliveden. In 1769 Oliver Goldsmith met a widow, Hannah Horneck, and her daughters, Catherine and Mary, nicknaming Catherine 'little Comedy' and Mary 'the Jessamy bride'. Despite the 20-year age gap, Goldsmith became infatuated with Mary and she provided the inspiration for 'She Stoops to Conquer'. She married a Colonel Gwynn after Goldsmith's death, becoming a woman of the Bedchamber to Queen Charlotte. Catherine, Mary's sister, married the artist William Henry Bunbury.

Three quarter length portrait of General Sir Henry Johnson (1748-1835) in uniform, standing before the town of New Ross, County Wexford. During the Irish Rebellion of 1798, Johnson was sent to occupy New Ross, which was then attacked by the Society of United Irishmen. When the attack failed, the British counterattack 'took no prisoners': one estimate puts the Irish dead at 2,800 of 3,000 attackers, against about 230 Loyalists.

An illustration from Robert Thornton's 'Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus'. Other states give the engraver's name as Henry Kingsbury.

Mezzotint with large margins. Fine impression. Rare.
Lot and one of his daughters, in the cave in the mountains, sitting side by side. They are leaning towards each other as the goblet in his right hand falls into her left. He holds her chin, drawing her towards him. Lot is an Old Testament figure, a son of Abraham's youngest brother. On the destruction of Sodom, he was rescued with his family by divine intervention, but against instruction, his wife turned back to look at the city, upon which she turned into a pillar of salt.

Full-length portrait of a woman dressed in a classical robe, holding a tambourine and dancing, women and girls play instruments behind her. Possibly of Dorothea Jordan (1761 - 1816), Anglo-Irish actress, as well as a courtesan. She was the long-time partner of Prince William, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), and the mother of 10 illegitimate children by him, all of whom took the surname FitzClarence.

Henry Frederick Stuart (1594 - 1612), first child of King James VI of Scotland (later King James I of England) and Anne of Denmark, was born on February 19, 1594, at Stirling Castle in Scotland. In November 1612 Henry suddenly took ill and died, probably of typhoid fever, though rumours circulated that the Prince was poisoned. Here he is depicted in armour during a lance drill, a jousting tournament in the background. A copy after the engraving by Simon de Passe. From a series of 15 copies of early engravings, 'Portraits of Royal Personages', by Turner, Earlom and Dunkarton, issued by Samuel Woodburn in book form in 1816.

Portrait of a woman, believed to be Mary Ann Yates, (1728-87, née Graham), English tragic actress. She married Richard Yates (c. 1706-96), a well-known comedian of the time. Dressed in classical robes, the woman stands, looking upwards.
