El Escorial in Madrid, the historical royal residence of the King of Spain, in particular Philip II. It served as a monastery, royal palace and tomb. It was King Philip's reaction to the Protestant Reformation, providing lodgings for the Hieronymite monks. Its structure is based on descriptions of Solomon's temple. Philip's most important contribution to the building was the donation of his personal collection of documents providing material for what was to become one of Europe's finest libraries. Title in Spanish and French. From a Spanish folio of views; numbered '12' to lower margin.
